brake noise

hi all.

whilst driving recently i have noticed a squeeling noise coming from one of the wheels.

not sure which one, seems like drivers side.

thing is it doesn`t always make the noise. it seems intermitant but more noticable on longer or even motorway driving.

at last service in march there was still 50% wear left on all pads.

any ideas?

could it be a failing caliper?

wheel bearings?

not wishing to muck around with brakes and safety, should i get my local toyota dealer to check the system fully and replace the entire system?

or can it be refurbished to a high standard whilst not breaking the bank?

Any half decent garage could sort this for you , no need to take it to a Toyota dealer and they're far too expensive.

No need to replace the entire system either.

Probably just a sticking slider/piston or a missing shim. The pads can wear surprisingly unevenly, even if the outside ones look okay the inside ones may well show much more wear.

Easily sorted by a garage if you cannot do it yourself. :)

The noise your hearing is most probably just the heavy vibration of the pad in the caliper under braking, the pad probably just needs some copper grease applied to the rear of the pad, always best to check the wear though to be safe, you can never be to careful with stuff like brakes.

We're a half decent garage and Mercx is spot on, it is dead easy to sort out if indeed it is a sticky caliper. If freeing/servicing the calipers doesn't cure then it is likely a wear ridge on the edge of the disc rotor (normal wearing out of the iron brake rotor) rubbing on the edge of the pad which often causes squealing with these newer pad materials.
