wireless router + setup

D-link DSL-G624T

Installed 3 of these (inc. mine) and 2 netgears (can't remember the exact model, but I can find out if needed - but 1 of them is the free one that now comes with sky).

The first netgear died, but has since been replaced by the same model and has had no problems.

Both are real easy to set up, but I'm swaying towards the D-Link as it is more configurable for the more advanced user.

I’ve had a Linksys router which was complete crap, a Netgear router which I’ve had no problems with at all apart from the occasional reboot and I now have a Orange live Box which works the best of the lot. The only problem with the Live Box is that you don’t have complete control of the box.

802.11n wireless routers are being released now so may be worth waiting a little? Mind you, they may cost a little bit more and the standard hasn't officially been agreed. Hasn't stopped Apple adopting it on their latest MacBook Pros though.

:Plug:

Are you running Windows Vista? I bought this 3com one after reading a lot of good reports about it, but have discovered it has issues with Vista. :( You can have it for £20 delivered. ;)

This modem have no issues with Vista at all. It is prolly your wireless card which is messing around. I set up few of them, most working with Vista without any problems - in fact I didn;t even have to update software or settings in modem itself.

Then 3com support folk just wanted to get rid of you. At least 3 of those working with Vista in customer houses with basic settings without any problem at all :) Rest is doing fine with XP and Win98. Realisticly, this modem is working on it's own system and his only role is accepting and routing connections. Router do not care, what system you have on your computer. Maybe your Vista have some strange firewall setting on, which blocking data packages to go through? Did you try to reset 3Com router to factory settings and try again? Remember, that you have to clone MAC address of your crappy BT router to make 3Com to work (it is standard practice of all internet providers). Usually to access 3com router, you have to connect your laptop/computer with wire to router and in internet explorer put in address line 192.168.1.1 - press enter, then standard password after factory reset thing is "admin" or "password" i belive. Check settings there. It HAVE to work :)
