Guest EddieRZ
Hey Mikey, Go Dell! I'm working at Heineken, the Netherlands: we've been using Toshiba for 5 years - Toshiba started getting troubles with supplying parts because they thought it was better to sell laptops instead of servicing them: we then changed to Dell because they have a really low DOA: after 5 years of Dell Heineken switched to HP, and boy..... did they find out the hard way that was not a good choice: lots of DOA's and a service desk that's taking sooooo long to get things fixed. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1501: this is the AMD3500 version with 80gb HD, 1gb memory and Windows Vista - Vista performs sort of okay - at the moment the laptop is dual-boot, so there's Vista and XP professional on it. Dell Hopes this helps a little - if you want more help, send a pm. Greetz, Eddie p.s.: it depends all on what you want to do with the laptop before you can make a final choice - I'm using the laptop because it's easy to use around the house - got a X2 6000 for my video-editing, so the laptop needs not to be high-end. caliAl
Dell are ok but they are not cheap. I have a HP laptop for work and it has not missed a beat in 2.5 years.
Guest EddieRZ
Hey Mikey, Just went through the list at Dell, and my Dell would cost you 476 pounds, which is incl. shipping and XP Home. I guarantee you won't be disappointed - if you choose the same configuration but then with XP Pro(you're going to do pro things? Home is enough for everyone that uses it not pro or in a network). With XP Pro it'll cost you 534 pounds. With Vista your ready at the same price as with XP Home, so 476. XP Home works perfect, and so does XP Pro - Vista is nice and has more of a "teletubbie" feel with all the round things and colorfull buttons.... you know what I mean. It still depends on what you want the laptop for - I use it for Internet and Office - games is o.k., but only the small ones - high end games won't run on any cheap laptops. carl0s
I like the Thinkpads but the T-series are back up to ~£1,000 now. There are some pretty high spec R60/61s but I think they're out of your price range (~£800 incl vat last time I bought one).

Sparky
Fujitsu Siemens do some Nice Amilo Pro laptops for that price range. The only downside Ive seen is that the batteries don't tend to last more than 3 years but its not an overly expensive thing to replace. Hp are good but you'll wanna spend money to get a nice one. Dell Laptops are also good but remember cheap will get you cheap! Imo Sony Vaios are the best on the market but you'd have to throw more money to get a fast 1! carl0s
Fujitsu Siemens have iffy build quality. I have supplied a reasonable number of the Lifebook S-series which are the professional thin/light/sexy ones, and I supplied many, many of the older E-series plain-jane 15" models and the B-series miniature touchscreen models. They're all 'okay', but they suffer light/flimsy build quality resulting in wobby hinges and broken touchpad buttons, and the usual painted plastic fade syndrome. As with many other laptops, they have a basic Chicony-type keyboard. Acer also have cheap chicony-style keyboards, sometimes with irritatingly odd layouts, and the touchpad buttons can't be tapped/clicked, they have to be pushed firmly. Basically the touchpad buttons are a major flaw in all the new style Acers I've played with. IBM/Lenovo in their Thinkpads use excellent keyboards and touchpads if you get one with the Ultranav (combined Trackpoint & Touchpad). Sony sell some shite, but some of their pricey sexy little machines have excellent keyboards. I've seen too many Toshibas with dead motherboards. HP.. hmm. Some are OK. I don't think too much of their Thinkpad-inspired nc/nx business notebooks, but they're acceptable I suppose. Their machines vary a lot but I supplied a pretty rugged HP machine to one guy and he loves it and has done for years. It's a proper solid beasty thing, can't remember the model, no doubt discontinued. Dell, hmm. When the price was right I was sending everybody in the direction of Latitude D510s, which were almost identical to the Latitude D610. They were coming out at ~£420 + vat and were a steal at that. Unfortunately all you can get from Dell for under £500 + vat now seems to be the bulky Inspiron stuff. All IMO, of course.
jase_93tt
Avoid any toshiba shite less than £450. Slow and cumbersome spring to mind. I gave mine to the missus. It can just about handle internet browsing (!)
