Shane
I love my sky HD the quality is amazing and there is going to be more channels soon, the engineer told me there going to be around 70 by early next year Think i paid about £250 for mine about 6 months ago. On the robbing score, my bill is now £75 a month from sky Mike Jeez £75 PCM What package are you on? Yes the HD channels are superb quality, but although I will get shot down for saying this, they are only back up to the same quality as they were at pre digital days. Last week we compared side by side an old (prob 8 years) 34" Sony CRT, brand new LG42 Plasma, brand new 42" Pioneer Plasma, one year old Sony LCD 46" and on anyhting other than an HD feed the CRT won hands over the flat panels. We used a variety of feeds, analogue, digital sat, DTT, HD. The guy at the top of the organisation I work for is a top horse racing man in the UK and has been getting aggitated with the amount of digital processing noise and artifacts he could see when watching horse races with the 46" LCD. We ran the demo for him so he could see the difference between the different types and make a choice.

SimonB
I just saw a sky advert on one of their channels that said they were going to cut the price of the Sky HD box for all customers in the autumn and that the longer you'd been with them the cheaper it would be. It didn't have any specifics though.
Jake
Jake, whats your sky+ box doing, and what model is it? I may be able to help you if you are not bothered about HD. Hi Shane, It's stated making a whirring noise a few weeks back. As far as I could tell it was the old 20gig HD because the fan in back of the case didn't seem to be running and there's no other moving parts I could see. I swapped the HD out for a 160gig PATA drive but it was way too noisy to live with. So I bought a new 160gig drive that was advertised as "virtually silent" but it was just as bad as the other one. We've just put up with it for the last couple of week because I'm pissed off with it now and don't know what else to try. Then the day before yesterday it just froze while recording something and had be unplugged for 5mins before it would work again, so I guess it's on its way out. Pete
Maybe so but I consider the BBC and their forced extortion of just over £10 per month to be an even bigger rip off. I never watch BBC and I feel that it is a complete rip off and I should not have to pay for something I do not want just so some fat asses can give themselves some ridiculous bonuses and the old boys at the BBC can keep their 'empire' intact. It's part of being British. We have to look after Auntie Beeb!

Then the day before yesterday it just froze while recording something and had be unplugged for 5mins before it would work again, so I guess it's on its way out. The lock up could be down to loads of things I am afraid, we have had them lock when they have lost signal for a moment whilst recording, or mains surge/noise or most likley if your fan isn't running, getting too hot. I can send you an original HD if you like from another good box to try, and if your fan has died I can find you one of those too. You know due to a senior moment I can't recall if the fan is on all the time or when it gets hot. Also try this if the lock ups become more frequent: 1) Remove mainslead from back 2) Press "BACK UP" button on front and keep it pressed 3) With button pressed in re-apply mains connector, keeping button pressed. 4) Hold finger on the button and eventually (normally within a minute) All the leds on the front panel will come on and you will get a message on your screen saying "software update, do not unplug", they say this lasts up to 10 mins but sometimes can be longer. When its finished the update it will switch off and go to standby, after about a minute you should be able to use it again. But as the message will say don't unplug the feed to it while it is downloading or it will be all over. Let me know if you need a HD, btw, I have never really heard of the noise being a problem, but then again most of ours are built into cabinets and controlled by IR extenders so maybe they are all making a racket and I just dont know it. Good luck.
