Jake
Looks like my poxy Sky+ box has just bought the farm. If I'm gonna buy another one (can't live without Sky+ now) then I may as well upgrade to a Sky HD box instead . . . as long as it works as a Sky+ box too. I think it does, can anyone confirm that? Any downsides I should be aware of? Thanks
Gamer
I can confirm that the Sky HD box does indeed come with Sky+ capabilities. No downsides apart from the same problem that you would encounter with normal Sky+ (Dropping connection in bad weather)
Kopite
What's the price on SKY HD boxes these days?
Gamer
It was £300 when we got ours 1 year ago.

Jake
Thanks Joe. Yet another tenner a month? Robbin gits those Sky folk. Oh well, they're already pulling my pants down for £54 a month so I won't hardly notice another tenner.

Gamer
Yet another tenner a month? Robbin gits those Sky folk. Maybe so but I consider the BBC and their forced extortion of just over £10 per month to be an even bigger rip off. I never watch BBC and I feel that it is a complete rip off and I should not have to pay for something I do not want just so some fat asses can give themselves some ridiculous bonuses and the old boys at the BBC can keep their 'empire' intact. IMO they should show commercial breaks and get with the times. This is the year 2007, not 19 friggin 60. Rant over.

Any downsides I should be aware of? Thanks Jake, whats your sky+ box doing, and what model is it? I may be able to help you if you are not bothered about HD. We have installed a few HD boxes at work and all were the Thomson box. The only problem we have had is inserting a "9" for the dialing prefix. For some reason they never seem to save the change, or drop out. Then I get bombarded with phone calls from the operator telling me that the sky box is calling them at all hours because our switchboards answer to (0). We have been told that this has been fixed but havn't had chance to find out yet. I am not sure if it is still the case, but Sky used to insist that they are installed by their "expert" installers and you couldn't just buy one off the shelf. Only some ASAs had access to them, but this could have changed by now if they are appearing on Ebay.

Not being into sports I do think at the moment the amount of material transmitted in HD is lacking though.
MrHanky
I wonder why that is? Folks not impressed with them? My friend bought his from a trader on Ebay and it has been working fine for him. Im thinking of doing the same as you and getting a HD box and I will be buying from a trader on Ebay.

Muffleman
Thinking of doing the same mate, Sky is really getting on my tits at the moment ! Seem to spend all evening flicking through 5000 channels and not finding anything to watch, which is a bit crap for £47odd a month. I'd rather bin Sky and buy four DVDs a month ! Well, tend to do that too but you know what I mean

Well, tend to do that too but you know what I mean Another thing we both do/have!! I have been meaning to ditch it for a while. This week we haven't missed anything and I have told the missus that if she wants to watch a film, I'll nip down the dvd shop for it. If anything it has made me appreciate the other channels we have. I may have problems when the new season starts as I'll be watching Spurs down the pub instead of home!! H.
Muffleman
Yeah I must admit I will miss the Spurs games this season if I cancel Sky, and what with us beating the gooners and finishing 4th, dont really want to miss the footie
JustGav
Agreed... I gave up watching TV as a rule, because of the amount of crap (Well apart from Jerry), and I found the most used channels by the kids is the Discovery Channel which is great, apart from that there is nothing else to watch, and when we as a family watch something, it is either a movie or discovery. The rest of the time I watch TV series from the US on the media centre. Yes they are downloaded, but why should we wait so long to get the same stuff WITHOUT 30 minutes of ads dropped in. DaveK
I just got Sky HD for free until about December. My mate flies to Florida tomorrow and gave me his HD box and card. He can't cancel the subscription until December, so I'll just unplug my Sky+ and plug in the HD box.

I couldn't give a feck for BBC1 but Radio 1 & 5 Live are worth the license fee alone in my view! Radio 1 especially - it's an institution!
