RedM
For the last two mornings (with car having been parked up all night) I have had a bit of a delay with the engine starting up after turning the key. I turn the key fully and it has either paused for about 1/2 second or clicked once then paused for 1/2 second before the engine fires. What is this? mattanna
Possibly a sticking solenoid on your starter, shee needs a tap with a hammer and a bit of wd, or get a recon one if it gets worse?
RedM
How much am I looking at?
mattanna
I am no mechanical expert but starter solenoids are a usual culprit, i do not think starter motors are that much tbh, get confirmation of someone more expert than me first but it does sound like it to me, the fact it fires up ok after suggests that everything like injectors, fuel delivery, ignition is ok, how long have your plugs been in? mattanna
how olds the battery? Good point, in my eagerness to be a clever bast**D i forgot that:)
dibbleyuk
My scooby used to do that i think it was the alarm at fault.
Chris Wilson
It's usually the first signs of brush wear, or solenoid contact wear in the starter. I have all the bits in stock to rebuild it, and it's not expensive. A new starter IS expensive though. Just test the battery first though. stevie_b
As Chris said, replacing the whole starter motor is usually not necessary. Toyota sell just the bit 'n' bobs needed to reburb it. Costs about £15 from Mr T I think. There's a FAQ about how to do it on here somewhere. I didn't follow it when mine needed doing, I chickened out and paid someone else more mechanically-minded to do the work! Edit: here's the FAQ: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=51682

I'd have said I was too busy and paid someone else to do it. ...which is what will be happening if the battery is okay.

RedM
Update: It didn't happen this morning! I'm still going to get the battery checked out tomorrow though and then if that's good I'll keep an eye on it instead of throwing more money at the car. Although the words delay and inevitable spring easily to mind.
stevie_b
Still sounds like starter motor contacts to me. I've had this happen, and the fault can be very intermittent. One day you'll be able to crank the car just fine, the next day it'll be as if the battery is flat as a pancake.
RedM
*fingers in ears* I can't hear you!
stevie_b
If you don't get it sorted, you soon won't hear any cranking either! Seriosuly though, in my experience the problem seems fairly stable. Assuming it is the contacts, it's unlikely to get worse fast. I used to have to have a few goes at turning the key before it would even crank slightly. In the back of my mind was the thought that, one day, it wouldn't want to know no matter how many times I tried.
supRo
Martin, I had similar starting problems. The battery clamps were slightly oxidized inside so cleaning them helped a little but the problems came back. I had the battery tested a few times by various garages using the traditional testers and also by the AA who used a fash looking bluetooth device that showed the battery performance on his laptop PC - They all indicated the battery was OK. I was still having the problems. A member on here who is a mechanic then tested the Battery with a very big and heavy battery tester - I guess that was much better, and showed the Battery wasn't performing. I replaced it with a Halfords battery and everything is now fne. Ro
mattanna
After my advice on here i was suffering starting probs on the Aristo, had to get a new battery and all is fine now, cost £72 bast**d Halfords:)
