How can I make going to the gym more bearable?

Well done mate. Just stick it out and my advice is to go STRAIGHT AFTER WORK so you don't get time to settle in and relax at home and put the ordeal off another day ;)

That's the busiest time! :(

Before work isn't too painful to be honest. I might try that with my mate Jay. It's probably the solution.

Cant lift much 100kg !! Blimey Greg thats just pi**ed on my bonfire, I though I was doing ok as well :D

Indeed. I'm a fair way off this!

How many reps do you do 100ks Greg?

I go to the gym 4 times a week, i need to go to the gym due to my back ! I don't have a problem motivating myself infact i enjoy going i always feel better for it.

There are always a few muscleman poser types, you aren't there to compete against them so let get on with it ;)

Try and find new excercises to work the various muscles to stop you getting bored and try and split up the different parts of the body in to different sessions.

When i go is the least busy time around 9 am this is when the mothers tend to be there having dropped the kids off at creche :D

I need to return to the gym as I have let myself go physically of late!! I came out in sympathy for the wife while she was pregnant....(if you are fat, i'll be fat etc).

I found going to the gym hard work and struggled to keep myself interested. All the things Pete put in his post are the things that everybody thinks about when they don't have a gym partner. The JJB places are not particularly people friendly either.

I gave up after I started putting a pork pie on the treadmill controls and caught it easy!! Worked out that I had burned less calories catching it than actually eating the pie!!

That must be a Wigan thing......:D

Forget weights, only run, ignore everyone and fill your gym MP3 player full of Maximo Park :)

Can't run. Buggers up my knee. :(

I just got back from the gym! lol

I find it hard to get my arse down there, mainly due to being too tired half the time as I start most mornings at 2.30am :( I try and go with someone as once i'm down there it isn't so bad as there's someone to chat too... passes the time no end :)

Pete, I sympathize with all your comments.

I've been weight-training for about 30 years now and the changes have been interesting. Years ago, hardcore gyms were almost invariably, in my experience, friendly places - whereas gyms in sports centres were cold and unwelcoming. Now, I think most commercial gyms are quite alienating environments, particularly if you've just joined.

I would persist with attempts at friendly interaction; it may be that others feel exactly the same as you do.

With regard to boredom, as others have said, a training partner is the best antidote.

Cardio training in gyms is mind-bendingly dull, there are a zillion better ways of increasing fitness. Strength-training or training for muscle are the only things I would use a gym for.

What I find interesting in the gym is: (a) trying out different routines and expanding my understanding of the effects of training and (b) making some sort of progress. What I can't do is just go there day after day and spin my wheels - it's too much effort to put in if I'm just staying at the same level. If that makes sense. For me, a training log is essential as it helps track progression.

If you're only doing four exercises, and don't really know what the exercise is for, it will get old really fast. As others have suggested, free weights may help, as well as experimenting with some different exercises (you could ask the least unfriendly looking muscle-head).

There are some great sites on the net for all levels of training, They can be really useful bearing in mind that standards of personal training vary stupendously.

Oh, lastly, mirror posers. Well, there are some genuinely vain guys of course, but also bear in mind that if you are weight training to build your body, you're going to check it out to see how you are doing. Nobody would expect a sprinter not to be continually checking his times. :)

100kgs on the machine guys where luckily you don't have to balance much. I can do 30 reps with 50kg each side, but that's going real slow with a min of 2 minutes rest in between each set.

Freeweights, I can do 60kg, so just goes to show the difference when you have to balance yourself. Plus, you do build more muscle with freeweights as your using a greater number of muscles in the movement.

All good fun hey. :)

Thanks for that Cliff - I was hoping you'd jump in. :)

I assume they're taking it easy with me and only doing the four things whilst I get my head around doing it. I've got to see the chap again after three weeks.

There is a free weight thing they got me doing where I have a weight in each hand and lift from my sides up to level with shoulders and back down and up again in a fluid slow motion. I have some of those weights at home so can do that here.

Best few things i find are:

1. Ipod

2. Young attractive females.

3. Young attractive female personal trainer.

4. Going with someone.

All the above have been mentioned so thats nothing new.

Also have you thought about going to any of the classes. I used to do the Spinning class at my gym and 40 mins of that is much better than 40 mins on the cardio machines, plus its fun and you can get chatting to everyone else in the class (if you can manage to breath after the 1st 10 mins that is). Might be worth looking at.

I see you're getting to grips with the technical vocabulary. ;)

Hi Pete, just seen this thread and has been a good read.

Motivation for the gym is a very tricky thing. But, no one can fix that for you, you MUST suss that bit out for yourself. Dont think you can go to the gym once a week or so, and build yourself a whole new body and good feeling within yourself in 4 weeks, it wont happen and you will just jack it in.

You obviously wnat to achive something here or you wouldnt have started this thread, so thats a start.

I started doing some weights at home 2 1/2 years ago, my older bro is a professional fitness/bodybuilder trainer so i got some hand me downs. I did this for 3 or 4 months and then decided i was best joining a gym. Weights at home are all very good for starting off, but i wanted the whole experience that goes with it.

So i joined a gym that was local to my work and home and have been a member for 2 years, it costs me £58 a month and that money is extremely well spent. If i go to the gym 4/5 times a week, thats costing me less than £3 a visit! I get to go as often as i want, i can use swimming pools, sauna's, jacusi's, go to classes fro free, i have made friends/training partners of which i also see outside the gym for drinks every now and then and have also been involved in relationsips that i otherwise would never have come across those people.

I have found that most people at a gym have got a similar mentality, they are willing to work to achieve something and understand the benefits of the phrase 'inner well being' Life will go on day by day, good and bad things will happen to us, i feel it is important we look after our bodies as not only does regular exercise make us feel better about ourselves, but if your equally happy, that will show to other people, partners, friends. Exercise IS fun mate, you just have to first work out what you want to achieve. Are you getting rid of fat, helping to nurse an injury or want to look like Arnie?

The best thing to do is work the above out, and then seek some advice on how best to achieve it. The amount of people i see doing exercises at the gym and doing them totally wrong. 4 months later you still see them doing the same routine and still wrong. Their body isnt changing, and are most probably causing themselves more harm than good, which will show its affects later in life, they will get the hump that they are not seeing rewards and will just jack it in. What a waste!

You need a routine mate and you need to stick with that each time you go, then after 6 weeks change it, or simply do the routine back to front for another 6 weeks. The same workout done in a different order is a totally different shock to your body. The important thing is to keep you body working, it will get used to what you throw at it and thats not a good thing for improvment. If you also go and do different things each time, purely because a piece of equipment isnt available, how will you know if you are becoming stronger at something. Its only when you see this happening, that you'll suiddenly think, christ, when i jojned i was lifting this, today i've just manged to life 10kg more and done an extra 3 reps. That is what will create the good inner feeling, and that is what will make you go back. Before you know it you wont be able to leave the place as you will constantly be competing against yourself or (hopefully) a training partner.

I'm happy to give you some advice, and there are also many others on here (im sure more qualified :) ) that can help write you a program to get started. You'll soon have so mnay variations of different exercises in your head, you will be able to mix and match them and make your own.

Best of luck mate, it IS good fun, if you dont think so, your either doing it wrong or are quite happy becoming a future fatty ;)

I'm happy to help you along with any of it mate. But true results wont just come from the gym, its your whole attitude to food/sleep etc. Its hard work mate, but nothing in life that is worthwhile will just fall in your lap.

Go out there and grab it with both hands Pete, some people arent fortunate enough to go to the gym!

One life, live it well! :)
