Which phone/broadband bundle?

Getrag

Recommended Posts

Just moving in to new flat and wondering what the latest and best phone/broadband bundles are. I've got a good deal on mobile phone so will probably use that for a lot of the phone calls. A fast and reliable connection is important so dont mind paying a bit for that.

Any recommendations?

Just stay away from Orange!

I use orange, I had a problem once where my connection went down for a few days and had to phone customers a hundred times to get the problem resolved, but I can't complain as it's free!

ohh also you should check how far you are away from your exchange and who has unbundled loops on it. There is a website that tells you, ill need to find it.

These companies will give you the faster speeds.

From the experiences of my parents, I would also steer clear of Sky. It's been better since I swapped their router, but it's still crap...

It really depends what you want your ADSL for; I'm not overly fussed on overall throughput - stability and low latency are more important to me. Sky have typical pings of 50ms+

The problems my parents have are fluctuating performance and dropouts. Of course this could be their exchange, but then they never had any problems before being LLU'd. My dad has given up ringing tech support as they are apparently useless

The router is the device Sky supply to connect your PC(s) to the ADSL line. The Sky supplied box is a rebranded and refirmwared Netgear box - swapping it out requires a bit of fiddling but isn't difficult. Since then, the dropouts have been less and the wireless works better.

I think a lot of it is probably down to your local exchange though - in heavily populated areas, I bet they have loads of subscribers due to price, which will probably impact performance.

Best bet is to have a read here, and decide what you want to actually do with your connection:
