ok, another question for you guys in the know.

I'm trying to get my head round the runnign costs of a UK Spec TT.

 

On average what do you guys spend per year maintaining the car, and on what?

Also any known faults for MOT's etc?

 

Also a couple of prices for the following please:

 

Boost leak - how much to fix?

Turbo seals - how much to fix?

intercooler - how much to replace?

 

the above are problems that i have seen around the forum in the last day.

 

Also I'm finding it hard to get details of stock UK TT's MPG. any clues?

MPG - i'd work on the probability that you will get 20mpg average (May well be a little less)

 

if your at all handy with the spanners the basic servicing is very DIY'able, and will save you money.

 

Turbo seals will be the most costly thing to fix, lots of labour costs and reconditioned turbos are not cheap either circa £1500-2250 maybe?

yeah, im ok with a spanner. just hope i can find a haynes manual!

Would I be right in thinking the turbo units will last a long time? its just that the seals fail? how likely is it that the seals will fail?

its unlikely, especially if you do all the right checks when first buying the car.

 

costs will definitely be in the £1000+ region if they do go though.....

 

 

There's a 300K+ mile one thats still running original turbo's with no seal problems, I've seen a 250k+ mile UK being sold that had just had a turbo refurb, but then Mcanny on here, i think had to do his seals at approx 80-90k (but he was unlucky and may have prolonged the turbo seals had he remained stock)

 

its a bit of a random thing, just have to check as much as possible before you buy and then you should be fine, but there are no certainty's.

all very well, but when you've not had much experience of a supra, or turbo charged engines, i dont really know what to look for to spot potential problems?

In other words, how do you know if the seal is on its way out? or in fact how do i even know its knackered.

Refurb turbo's are can be had £500 each IIRC on an exchange basis.

 

The tubo seals are not prone to going on these cars, nothing is prone to breaking if the car has been maintained properly.

 

If you don't have an idea about cars take somebody with you who does, or pay for AA guy to have a look at it.

 

You have to remeber that the people that post up about these breakges are often running higher than stock boost levels. This will drastically reduce the life of the turbo's, how long depends on each car.

 

The point is everyone accepts this when get a decat or boost controller and start modding the car.

 

The turbos are not prone to failing any more than any other mechanical part of the car if they, like the other parts of the car, have been maintained properly.

firstly you need to read this as it has lots of useful info

 

 

Basically 'IF' the seals are worn then they will leak oil.

 

If the exhaust side seal has gone it will burn the oil giving blue smoke form the exhuast.

 

If the other side is worn, then oil can pool up in the airbox, or actually out of an aftermarket filter, like the recent leaking oil thread (not definitely the seals but i wouldn't buy a car that was doing this!)

 

There is little you can do beyond visual inspections as most owners are not going to let you dismantle stuff.

 

Seals will obviously degrade and therefore the above effects will only be slight in the early stages of failure.

 

If any blue smoke is witnessed from the exhaust other than a very small amount on start up then i'd go look at the next one on your list!

 

Just to confirm what others have said "this is a rare event" as are any other significant mechanical failures.

OK so here's my take on the whole Supra ownership business, feel free to ignore if you don't agree :)

 

You asked:

Boost leaks can cost anything from a few pence upwards, it really does depend where they are leaking. Usually its a split hose or the like, so not necessarily a costly item

 

Turbo seals, if they go will, as Scooter said, cost £1000+ personally I'd bargain nearer £2000 for replacement of both turbos including fitting.

 

Intercoolers are £1000+ from Toyota. Chris Wilson does an upgraded one for about £550. Lovatt is arranging a group buy on his version of these at the moment.

 

MoTs. Nothing special, rear tyres seem to wear at an alarming rate if you drive it enthusiastically. If its had a decat, either stick a cat back in (my recommendation) or find someone who'll turn a blind eye :)

 

By virtue of the fact that it cost nearly £40000 when new, a Supra is never going to be a cheap car to run, especially if you let Toyota source your parts for you.

 

If by buying the car you're so skint that you can't afford to repair it if it does go wrong, then it maybe best to look at something else that may be a bit easier on the pocket in the event of a failure.

 

A few years ago I really fancied a 300ZX, until I read all the horror stories, and spoke to the owners, most of whom had shelled out a fair bit of cash to keep the thing on the road. At that time I realised that I could afford to buy it, but not run it.:0

 

The Supra isn't anything like that bad, in fact in standard form its extremely reliable, but if the worse happens and it does go wrong, it aint cheap to fix.

 

If you haven't experience the fuel consumption of something like this, its a real eye opener. I'm getting about 18-20 mpg in mixed driving, I don't pussy foot about and I welcome every bridge and tunnel to change down a couple of gears and boot it, but I'm not doing high speeds (for long :)) or many insane accelleration tests.:p

 

To give you an idea of what its like, if say, your car does 30 mpg at the moment, every time you put £20 worth of fuel in, take another £10 out your pocket and stick it away somewhere or give it to charity. If you can survive paying that much each week/month, at least you'll be able to afford to stick juice in the thing :D

 

In summary I'd say if you really can afford it, go for it, you'll look a long time for a better car than the Supra. If you honestly can't afford it, buy something else, the Supra will kep you poor and you'll resent driving it because its costing you all your money. You'll also always be waiting for something major to go wrong that you can't afford to fix.
