T04 turbo

dangerous brain

Recommended Posts

I need a T04 turbo to replace my garret t61, 4 bolt flange turbo. Mines got the onset of bearing wear (big thanks to Dan for spotting that on the dyno before we tried mapping it to 1.4 bar). I can refurb the turbo but given the cost of refurbing and the relative cheapness of turbo's that seem to be knocking around right now I thought I would post up and see what was available.

If anyone knows somewhere that does bearing replacement and rebalance on turbo's at a reasonable price I would be interested in that too.

I wouldn't bother Bry. When the bearings in my PHR1 GT60 turbo went it was actually cheaper to just buy another turbo.

Much less hassle too. For a start you've only got to have it shipped one way and if they seller has it in stock you can have it in 3 days even if it's coming from the US.

Something like a .81AR GT4088 would suit and at about £500 a pop they're practically disposal items.

Hmm problem is that the flange won't just bolt up with a 4088 will it? Mine is a four bolt up flange to the downpipe and a four bolt up flange to the manifold pipe on the exhaust side. I have been advised that in all reality the V band clamp flange should just unbolt and my bolt on flange should bolt in place if I stick with the same design t61 turbo. I have a very good offer on a t61 right now but with a V-band flange to the downpipe.

I've also heard back from turbo dynamics in poole (handily close to my UK address that they will only charge me £175+dreaded to replace the bearings and seals)

To answer chris's post yes I believe a garret is probably great for a huge amount of miles which this one may have already done, The possibility is quite high that the previous japanese owners reluctance to fit a a BOV has removed some of those miles from the turbo's life. Its a garett T04r turbo according to the plate on it. 0.70 a/r there is a garett part number on it which I will have to ask dan for as I am now back in Holland. As for price wise I already have a damn good offer at £400 for a bl one I think and I was told to expect to pay anywhere from £500 upwards. Basically I want the best quality for money option so no cheapo crap that'll bust the first time it boosts or no ludicrously expensive lasts 10 times longer than the car ever will type either if that makes any sense.

Jake how much hassle was fitting and mapping another turbo?

The gt4088 has a T4, aka T04, flange - so no problem there. The vast majority of them are have a vband exhaust fitment.

Turbo Dynamics still have my GT60. Like you, they also told me a cheap price beforehand. They took the turbo for inspection and got back to me a few days later and were like "We can bodge it up for about £500 but there no guarantee it won't fail again. Or we can upgrade the internals for . . . . (they then started talking silly money and I stopped listening).

Fitting the new turbo was a cakewalk. I did it myself in less than an hour. The re-mapping was done by Ryan G, took a few hours and was very reasonably priced. Put it this way, I gave him a 50% tip. :)

The GT4088 also seems like a very solidly build turbo, far, far more substantial that other brands (probably due to it being made for large capacity diesel DAF engines). Some pics compared to a BL T67, you can see that the compressor is pretty much the same, but both the housings are far more substantial

You do realize that diesel engine turbos have a very different grade of cast iron for the turbine housing than those for petrol engines, as EGT's vary enormously across the two engine combustion types? This is one reason why el cheapo turbos warp and crack the turbine housings for fun...

Would I be correct in assuming though that a gt4088 would require a better fuel system than 650cc injectors?

I run 650cc injectors on mine and i hit around 71% duty at 1.1 bar and when testing at 1.4 bar i hit around 82% max so there fine for stock cams setup

Mines not got stock cams in (at least I hope not as the spec sheet said it had HKS cams in). So basically its an idea to go with bigger injectors if I use a gt4088. This I am sure means more power which my beleaguered gearbox just won't take. I think I am going to go with the T04 bl that I have been offered and refab the downpipe to accept the v-band clamp fitting.
