JustGav
Well, I can confirm NTL definitely do bandwidth throttling... I've gone from 20mb/1mb to 5mb/256kb due to downloading more than 3gb today. So next time someone says their internet is slow, you may wish to check your downloads So much for being able to download at lightning speeds, still got another QNX image to go as well. http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html
Branners
they really do want to knacker their whole business just as they are about to be bought out. The top 5% thing is strange. So if everybody in my area just downloads emails and I decide to download some content off youtube then I could be in that top 5 and get capped? Certainly my speed went crap last week and I was getting just 1mb and not the 4mb I expected. Im not a heavy user at all though. JB
Class One
hence why i don't go with a tertiary provider, they promise you the earth but often can't deliver. I never have any probs with BT. If it's cheap. then there's a catch.
JustGav
Funnily enough, I find youtube to be terrible generally on virgin media, even when it has been a quiet 72 hours on my network (got the traffic graphs to prove it) I find youtube constantly buffers and doesn't play smoothly, with 20mb I'd not expect that to be the case.. RedM
I think nearly all ISPs now have some form of 'traffic shaping'. I think it's really going to hinder progress when you compare to the US and much of Europe. Imagine the issues caused by being able to enjoy 1,500 high definition HDTV channels simultaneously and download a full high definition DVD in just two seconds! JamesG
I'm finding the throttling very annoying too. 3Gb is only about 30 mins downloading before my transfer rate drops massively. Also, I'm not getting the full 20Mbits/sec. The highest I get is 16Mbits/sec and the speed seems very variable.

The main reason I have 20gb is not for downloading as such, but because of the fact that the whole family has pc's.. (3 desktops, and 3 laptops), so the 3gb disappears quickly.
