There is no way that an auto would beat a manual round a track though, given a decent driver of both. You simply don't have the same control over the weight transfer when cornering, or the same flexibility with gear ratios, the extra transmission losses of the auto would be felt too. On the 1/4 mile a perfectly driven manual would also beat an auto, but it's much harder to achieve, which is why autos tend to beat manuals because you can do a good time consistantly. dangerous brain
I know for sure that I would get a better time around a track like silverstone for instance in my car than I would in your car Si. Where you lose in gear length you gain in less changes needed. The speed of gear change is obviously down to each individual driver, I am no slouch on a gear change but an auto change would beat me hands down. As I stated previously you can preselect a gear in advance before you even get near a corner with the auto box and it will change for you at the optimal revs leaving you much more time and feel for the corner. On an extremely twisty track with very variable corner speeds then a manual may find itself with more high end rev ranges to match to more corners but it would take a particularly good driver to extract that advantage. Oh and an N/A only has 5 gears to choose from as well.
dude
Having now driven loads of 6 speeds i cannot figure out why anyone would want one at all , i dont know about the 5 speed but the 6 spd feels like it belongs in a tractor !!!! As for a manual being quicker in a straight line , you will have 4 or 5 gear changes to make in a 1/4 where you will have to let ff the gas , i will have 2 where i dont and you can barely hear my box change its so fast , a case in point is Kean from BL he had an auto and a manual car and couldnt get the 6 spd to within a second of the auto !!!! Mind you the 6 spd is good for Hero status , when kids look in and for that blip between gears that costs sooo much time I still remember at TOTB in the afternoon right at the end of qualifying a guy looks in the car , turns to his mates and says 'its only an auto' just after the car ran a 10.8 , the same guy sticks his head in the window and wants to know all about autos !!! Polemarch
I think it's down to the entrenched manual support harking back decades to times when car prices, reliability and fuel consumption were all set against autos. Also, an auto is at its worst in low powered cars, the very vehicles most Brits drive and have always driven. :-) You can gauge by the number of manuals and autos on this board that they are basically equals and that it comes down to personal preference in the end. You'll be very happy I think with whichever car you go for.
Steve W2
PMSL at DB and WSB2 'my dick is bigger than yours' 50cm:p :p I would have the manual in the NA, and the auto in the TT. I would like to have a manula gearbox in the TT for about 5% of the time I am driving it. When ragging the car round a track of through a decent set of twisties, I would prefer the manual. I am very confident the auto box would keep up but is a preference thing. For all other times thew auto wins it hands down for me. The gerabox in the TT and and NA (manual) are different and I prefer the NA gearbox of the two. As has been said auto boxes are better suited to cars with a bit of power and as such is better in the TT. As always it's all down to personal prefernce and both boxes are great. One thing is for sure though, you do have to try all variations before making any comparisons (WSB2! )
Whitesupraboy2
what i compared....i looked thought erhh that a ugly stick in a TT i guess having a Auto would probably be ok, but in a NA, id rather have a manual and to be honest in TT too. Like most say it personal preference both good, i just wouldnt know what to do with my left hand thats all
