georigg
I've read a fair amount on the converters that are available from KPH to MPH and they appear to be either, 1 An adaptor fitted to the gearbox speed sensor which reduces the signal by 5/8. 2. The TRL/Thor unit(not presently available) which takes the original gearbox output signal and changes the speedo input to a 5/8 sgnal. Does anyone else market a similar unit? The apparent benefit of the TRL/Thor method is that it "does not screw up kick-up speeds or affect the cruise control". My question............................ Ebay shows a couple of units which are fitted at the gearbox(circa £20-40.) Has anyone fitted these and can you comment on their effectiveness........................? As I do not have cruise control, but do have an auto Mk4 I was thinking I can modify the Odometer to read Miles by changing the resistor positions(see Tech help section) and then simply need to change the speedo to indicate "30" instead of showing 50KPH etc. Has anyone done this and does it muck up change up speeds etc. or indeed anything else? (Note: I know I can just fit a new card on the speedo but do not want one that only reads to 110MPH) Any and all comments gratefully received please. Pete
No gearbox mod for the Supra - it will also interfere with operation of other things that rely on the speed sensor. I run a SpeedM8 converter. There's loads out there though if you look in the back of Jap car mags etc.
Matt Harwood
I've used a couple of SpeedM8 units and I'd recommend them. Only downside, compared to the Thor ones, is that you'll need two units. One for speed conversion and another to delimit. IIRC the price difference between the Thor ones and the two SpeedM8 ones is less than a tenner. Some of the 'cheaper' speed converters only de-limit by giving out a 5/8th signal there-by moving the speed restriction from 180 KPH to 180 MPH. This type is shite on a Supra bacause it will also throw out everything else relying on speed signals, like power steering, the autobox, auto spoilers etc... Stick to known good ones. supradriver
where do you get a clock face from i just got a speed m8 from NCS systems
Matt Harwood
The last time I got one, it came with an MPH sticker to cover the KPH marking. Once the SpeedM8 thing is fitted, the speedo should read in MPH anyway, so you shouldn't need a speedo face.

georigg
Just ordered a SpeedM8 as I could not wait for the next batch of Thor units to be produced. I'm also having a Meta M99/36T2 alarm/immobiliser fitted next Monday and I will post again after fitting with opinions etc.. Thanks to all above who posted advice.
