Leaking from or around sump plug

Forgive me for not knowing the correct name for it but I appear to be leaking oil form the thing you undo to drain the oil.

It's not leaking a lot as the oil on the ground slightly larger than a fifty pence piece after 10 hours. There is a lot of oil around the 'thingy' though so I'm assuming some will be getting out while I'm driving and spraying over the area.

I can't jack the car up on my drive and can barely reach the 'thing' let alone try to tighten it.

I'm doing fine oil level-wise but it needs sorting.

FWIW I'm using an after-market 'thingy'. Could it not be fitting right? I'm wondering if my heavy-ish oil usage can be traced back to the time I had it fitted. Is an OEM 'thing' the best way to go?

Any thoughts about this? Could it be something alse in that area which may need investigating?

It's aftermarket in that my ex-mechanic had some made up with a magnet attached that pulls out any odd bits of metal.

Darryl,

Both parts are pretty cheap aren't they?

The gasket is something like 10p, my local Toyota give them away for free when I buy an oil filter. Not sure about the plug, probably a couple of quid knowing Toyota!

This is a little worrying. I did my oil for the first time after buying the car and mine was on very very tight. No gasket at all, just a metal bolt. I did it up pretty tight.. no leaks yet..

If you do decide/manage to jack it up dont get under that car without using some decent axle stands.

Probably the copper thingy washer thingy is missing from the sump thingy plug.

Or even worse the sump thingy plug has been cross thingy threaded and bodged on so now its knackered the threads in the sump and is leaking. Lets hope not!

The OME washer is a ali-cored fibre washer. As mentioned earlier my dealer always throws one in the box, he always reminds me to take off the clear seal sheet on the filter before fitting the filter.Apparently they had some cars sustaining damage when the plastic has not been removed by a muppets .

I prefer copper washers on sumps. I always heat the washer to red heat to soften the metal, and cooled in air, before fitting, so it makes a perfect seal.

I had a "specialist" garage near me fit a red fibre washer, similar to those you find in taps, once. I spotted it when oil started leaking from the sump plug onto my drive.

The washer had relaxed and the plug had come loose. Needless to say I didn't go back there again.
