RobSheffield
Hello In my never ending search for lucrative yet not too demanding employment, i thought of becoming a train driver (outlay on lorry driving seems a little excessive, to be sat in a queue on the M25 all day ) Pros :- No customer contact, stay dry, decent money (afaik, difficult to find one answer on that) nice bit of pride in a job well done, Cons :- Boring? Risk of crash/accident unlikely you will come off well. Any more input?

Mike
Plenty of downtime - leaves on track etc. Lots of National travel to exotic places... Waterloo, Clapham Junction etc. How random are you?

scooby_doo_do
If you do decide to take this.... Can you please make sure the heaters are turned off ... I hate getting on my train from Chelmsford to london and they leave them on.. I pay £2,800 a year, can't get a seat, feel like a sardine, get to work late and sweaty. Rant over. Pro's.. Los of space in the main cabin and you get to talk to people via the intercom, get to splatter lots of flies. Con's... Not that many corners, get people pulling alarm's trying to get off the train. uk-rich
normally they involve 12 hours shifts, starting at some very stange times too, which company do you have in mind
bolarbag
Pros.....Sh*t hot money for what you actually do, free rail tavel for you and family(not sure if thats a con) barely have to do anything, long stable(boring) career....get to look at trees:) Cons...Lots of training, around 2years before it starts to die down, f*ck up and your out of there, Tunnel Vision likely:D, massive responsibility, you are on a two strikes and out system, and your not allowed to work for another company for something like 2years, example, were doing live tests, poor driver stops an empty carriage and a half away from the required stop....oh shit he thinks as he gets a phonecall telling him dont move his boss and goons are coming to check the trains data acquisition... result sacked...wasnt even anything major! But must have been good while it lasted;)
Fifty
sounds great - I would make sure your not colour blind first though. did you see the Bombay Railway programme last night; in India TD's are highly respected. Rich

Wayney
Mate I can't think of nothing worse than being a Truck Driver!! (Sorry to all the truckies out there) 1) Always from home, so when u do settle down, its goona be hard strain on your family, you obviously being away. 2) Living out of service stations, having to use their shitty showers, loos and eat that thing they call food!! 3) Eat, sleep, sh*t in a cabin 4 meters by 4!! 4) Endless Traffic Jams!! Dude theres gotta be better jobs out there, even in Sheffield!! I would say think about what you enjoy, or passionate about and start from there. Have you considered working for your self? Your a smart lad (not that I'm licking ur a** or any thing) and strongly feel that you have a lot more potential, than working for some mug. Al Massey
my dad was training to be a train operater and he was bored out of his head, only lasted 4 months then asked to be a mechanic instead as the trains engine is the same as a chieftan tank but got bored of that as you have to be a driver first
Kranz
Not being able to do anything if someone throws themselves infront of the train (a common occurance down my way) would be my biggest worry. But the big payout for the distress caused would probably cushion the blow

Now there is a target! I knew someone who was a traindriver, loved it. Got around 25k when trained iirc which isn't too bad.
RobSheffield
Exactly, i think the lack of doing things in the event of a person jumping would possibly be an issue I need to find more info really, but it isnt easy
