RobSheffield
Trying to fix a friends PC, its very old, runs 128MB RAM, and a clockwork CPU no doubt. Simply trying to get it to run MSN and thats all. MSN is saying the proxy settings are wrong. Firefox works perfectly but IE has a 403 error. What could be wrong and how do i sort it? Thanks
GeordieSteve
Do you have a proxy in place at all?
RobSheffield
I dont know.... Darn thing has been connected to the internet for 5 years on dial up. I have removed loads of spyware and assorted crap off it, got it to run at reasonable speed, (antivirus checks running now!) but i dont know why Firefox will run but IE wont. Its now on Tesco broadband running off a belkin USB wireless connection.
edd_t
i doubt it should be using proxy setting. in IE: Tools - Internet Options - Connections - Lan Settings - Untick use proxy In MSN: Tools - Options - Connection - Advanced Settings - Remove proxy settings. Things should really be set to automatic
GeordieSteve
I don't have MSN installed at work but go through the options and clear out any proxy settings... do the same in IE (MSN may well get it's proxy settings from IE). Sounds like just a home PC so doubt you have any proxy in place
RobSheffield
Great stuff guys, IE now works! Ill give msn a go when it generates enough steam to get it loaded....
Thorin
Have you tried turning it off and on again? Is your car finished yet?

carl0s
This is normal for Freeserve and probably other dialup providers. Part of their setup procedure configured IE to use www-cache.freeserve.net
RobSheffield
I couldnt figure that out as apparently its never been on freeserve internet. I did find some reference to Freeserve though, cant remember if its as you said though Carlos
