Jake, I'm disappointed you're not coming to TOTB.
Me too, Doug. :(

It'll be the first one I've missed since 2003

What can I do to make you change your mind?
Well, you could do my shift at Visa Europe that weekend. How's your Unix skillz?

When I first started in IT back in 92, my boss sat me down and made me learn VI, and said if you can do VI you will be fine on any flavour of unix, the rest is in the man files.

This was on some WACKY version of unix on MCD machines (MCD4680 I believe..) ran both sysv and bsd style OS which screwed me up for years afterwards *grin* It took me 2 months to get gcc to compile :p

That's vi not VI you n00b! :)

I nearly had a fit when they first showed me the vi editor. I was like "let me get this straight; I press the L key to move the cursor right? Can't I just use notepad and paste it in when I'm done?" :D

I love vi now though. Best editor ever.

Hehehe, funny you should say that..

The other friday, my mates ben and phil were round and we had a frank discussion on salaries and stuff...

Bit of background

Phil = Tyre Fitter (How_supra has met him when she had new tyres)

Ben = Carpenter

Myself = IT

We were just commenting about how my current job pays so well, but I then explained that IT life span isn't as good as people think. Having been caught in the Dotcom rush (was in IT prior to that, so I'm not what I would class as a dotcom bunny), and at the moment yes I'm on the wave so it helps.

However I've been made redundant in the past and the super income drops to 0, whereas someone like Ben who is a carpenter/handyman will pretty much ALWAYS have an income (while it may be lower) since people always need a place to live and that needs to be maintained. During that period when the income was 0, we as a family took a hard hit.
