Dog breeders, dog buyers, lunatics

I know quite a few dog lovers reside here, so hopefully you will understand my anger...

I just had a phone call from someone that has bought a Russian Black Terrier from some idiot breeder in the UK. God knows how they found my number, but still. This lady has had it from 14 weeks, it's a male, and it's now 18 months. She lives in a flat in London, and has 2 young children, under 10 years of age. The dog's had no proper training, has nowhere to exercise off leash, the kids tease it "a bit", and now it's bitten one of them, and has had a go at various callers. She is amazed at this. I asked if she knew what the things were bred for. She knew sod all about their history, she was told they make lovely family pets, need little exercise, are great with young kids, and don't shed. All of this is total rubbish. Her "friend" has said get it castrated, her neighbour has said get it put down. It's had no training, nor, from the screaming in the background, and their refusal to be quiet when she told them about a dozen times, have her kids (why aren't they at school...?). She's genuinely upset, but I have no answer for her. She says she has neither the time nor money to take the dog for professional training. She's been sold a totally unsuitable breed by someone obviously in it for the money, and she's failed in her duty to research buying the dog, she's probably just bought it because it looked cute and was told just what the seller thought she'd like to hear in order to close a sale.

It's distressing to think of how many dogs land in totally unsuitable homes. When we bred ours we ended up keeping 3 as I just wouldn't sell them to several people as they just weren't able to satisfy me they had researched what they were buying, nor had a suitable home for it. Another dog's probably doomed now :(

Not nice.

We want an Alaskan Malamute one day, and we're starting preparing now, the things we want to do in the home are being adapted to suit a dog! We're even planning one of us to work from home to look after the thing - it's more important than children in my eyes.

I still don't think we're suitable for it though, and we'll be talking to a local breeder about it as well.

Hate people who don't treat pets like any other family member (well I suppose this woman was treating it like her other family members!!!).

I know where you are coming from. This must happen SO MUCH. it is very worrying. I was watching an episode of Dog Borstal the other day and there was a white GSD on there and they guy freely admits he bought it from a litter where he could see the parents because they were likely to bite him. WTF???

Can you foster it until it finds a home?

I have 2 GSDs, unfortunately they are not the most social of animals (just like their owners :D) but they did grow up in South Africa and the idea of them was to bark and scare people... Which they were very good at!

All that has had to change since we came here...

Its very common. Remember the guy who wanted to get a big dog for "security" ?

My old man was at the vet the other day and some young pup (quite a big dog) had a little bite out at him, the owner just laughed about it and gave the dog the most half hearted telling off, you could see she had no control whatsoever of this dog, i imagine it would do the same thing at a little child and there would be all sorts of uproar about it..

Its sad that this lady has been sold an usuitable dog, but if she had done a bit of research she would have saved herself the money and these problems.

Unfortunately as ever the dog is the victim as it will end up doing something wrong as it doesn't know any better and either be taken away or put down :(

A guy I used to work with had 2 dogs and when they were pups one of them chewed up his couch so now all they do day in day out is sit in the hall. He does take them out occasionally but its still a shame for them just lying on a wooden floor all day and night.

Lovely dogs aswell

Another sad story chris.

I know many breaders like yourself who vet the buyers and dig deep before they sell.

This situation is becoming major in manchester and other big cities where mainly alot of breeding of the canary dog (pressa canario) beautifal dogs but so very dangerous in the wrong hands which sadly seems to be the main reason for breeding, i cant see it being long before these are banned :(

Rosie - You can make a living out of it! Do you know any big breeders? You may no longer have a social life but im sure theres other rewards.

I know several BIG breeders all of which earn well but have a massive spend out and no time for much else but they started off in the showing scene to make up some champs and went from there.

I'd have seriously given thought to asking her if she wanted the dog re homed and trying to turn her dog around, but we have 8 dogs already, and the 2 RBT brothers are at "that" age (16 months or so) where they are trying it on. We have a bitch in season and they have decided to challenge their dad over who is top dog (big mistake, luckily not too much damage). Another testosterone fuelled young male is too much to contemplate right now :)

Yes sorry I realise that, but you do need to be big into the show scene which I'm not, I prefer activities like agility, tracking and such like. It's too cliquey and who you know based for me. You need several bitches and kennels etc then they are never really pets and I don't like the idea of that. You can't do it with just a bitch or 2.

Chris, if I had more time I would offer to foster until a new home was found but I couldn't put in enough time/commitment right now.

I thought you were doing? :) Margaret's takings are down, she blames the smoking ban. They have a wooden shelter for those in dire need. I have stopped altogether, hence I am a bit ratty, and drinking more.

Think I'll be there for evening dinner tomorrow...and maybe a beer.

I'm surprised the locals are sticking to the ban - thought it would be ignored to be honest.

I have your ink here too.
