wkdtime
Hi guys, Im running a T67 with 500HP, I always use Silkolene Pro s 10W50 and my oil temps on long sprints are around 97 Degs. on the gauge, when Dyno'd at dans it peaked at 97 Degs. My question is, Do I need an oil cooler? (I don't do track's) If so, Is it a must that I should fit an oil relocation too (I'd like to keep the oil filter at the OEM position) Regards, -Wkd
Stevie Boy
You dont need to fit a relocation, just a sandwich plate screwed in where filter goes (with thermostat control) the oil lines take off from that heading to your cooler. Oil filter will now sits on the sandwhich plate. As i have on my car, not 500hp tho! Makes it a little tighter getting oil filter on and off now though as it sits a little closer to the body, oil filter relocation makes for swift easy oil filter changes plus gives you a little more oil capacity in the engine as the JZ80 doesn't hold that much really in comparison to some high performance big engines. Alex
If you EVER plan to use the car on track then yes I think it would be a sound investment. 16-25 row cooler with a thermostatic valve....you don't want the oil too cool.

Cheers dude......but do I really need an oil cooler? BTW the readings were taken from the sump where it's slighly cooler I believe.

Alex
You need to get the oil over 100degC now and again to boil off water etc...so you're fine as you are. I'd leave well alone as you're only introducing more things that can fail...I know Nic had a GReddy system dump oil all over the road once! wkdtime
Oh yeah, I dunno if you have to fit an oil cooler but, my theory on putting one on my (derestricted + BPU J-Spec) was AFAIK the UK Spec running approx 320hp has an additional oil cooler in the N/S front bumper J-Spec doesn't so with my BPU running over that if TOYOTA thought it was necessary on a UK so I fitted a Whifbitz Oil Cooler kit. Made by MOCAL, think it's 16row and relatively inexpensive compared to "Branded" jobbies. Not as pretty to look at but does the job and I don't see how it can do any harm especially with it having a thermostat. But are you still running the same oil Toyota reccomended? Do you happen to know what made it fail? Surely it was down to installation theres not that much to a cooler kit couple of hoses, sandwich plate and cooler if hoses arn't rubbing on anything and cooler doesn't get smashed should be ok surely. Alex
I'd carry on as you are, when you've been using the car hard for a few mins check the temps....if you notice it's getting to the 110+'s from just your usual usage, then it's time to upgrade...if not keep it simple. I think the coupling failed. Hose came off and that was that. I think if the rest of the cooling system is in good condition it's not a worry espescially in our climate. Nic lives in HK where the mean temp is very much higher which is why he fitted the oil cooler in the first place.
Stevie Boy
But are you still running the same oil Toyota reccomended? Just don't fit one dude, you'll be fine. Like Alex says the less stuff you change/add the less likely things are to go wrong!
Nic
I read about that, It's why I just want to install what I really need for ther car. If you do fit one make sure it has proper threaded connectors for the piping. The GReddy one that blew a hose had push fit sprung connectors (similar principle to garden hose attachment). The thing caused the engine to seize a main bearing and could have quite easily cost me my life. It was replaced with an HKS Type R oil cooler. I dunno, anyway WKD as Alex has said better to safe than sorry if temps are OK and your not tracking-it it's not necessary.

The MOCAL kit I got had Anodised Aerospace style screw on fittings with braided Aeroquip hose, just wondering if I need to worry bought these at all, AFAIK they're quite widely used in motorsport. OnionMan
I'm just curious now (curiousity killed the cat!) so i'm prepared to be shot down. Did the UK Spec have additional Oil Cooler in N/S front wing then? Its a transmission cooler
Stevie Boy
Its a transmission cooler Oh yes, makes sense. Do they still have the transmission cooler/heat exchanger at the bottom of the radiator?

This would explain why I fitted a Transmission Cooler as WELL as Engine Oil cooler to my J-Spec TT, go easy on me it has been 4years since I fitted them my car! Memory's not as good as it used to be as the years roll on
Chris Wilson
You NEED an oil cooler if you often see sump oil temps of 120 or over. Under 100 you definitely do not need one.
