wHIZz
Yep, I can confirm the freezer trick works (if it is still powering up). Have used it several times. Best to wrap it in a jiffy bag first - most recently I froze a 120GB Maxtor drive for 2 hours and got 30 mins use out of it - enough to get my data off. You will get condensation when you power it back up but I just wiped it every few minutes with kitchen roll! wHIZz
RobSheffield
Doesnt Lewis specialise in getting data back? Disclaimer - if Lewis does not specialise in data retrieval i apologise to him, his company and all his relatives inclusive but not limited to, his auntie Flo, uncle George, Nana and grandad and his pet goldfish Bubbles, Furthermore my speculation that the gentleman going by the pseudonym 'Lewis' in fact specialises in data retrieval was my own opinion and not that of mksupra.net, any of its moderators, site owners, or of Jelsoft enterprises Ltd, further details on request In addition to this, i would like to point out that if Lewis DOES indeed offer data retrieval that other data retrieval companies are available Thankyou
Guest gzaerojon
yeah the freezer trick is a last resort. I think it can also help unstable chips run. Semiconductors become alot less resistive at low temps. Yep, I can confirm the freezer trick works (if it is still powering up). Have used it several times. ozz
Dropping it from a height of around 6-8 inches onto a hard surface can also help. As a last resort obviously, but it could free up the platters for data retrieval. The freezer thing does a similar thing and IIRC works by shrinking the internal parts allowing the platters to spin, usually lasts until the drive gets hot. And def stick it in a bag if you do that! I did have a guide to recovering hard drives, I'll look at home later. Rarely worth asking recovery specialists as most require hermatically (spelling?!) sealed labs and is therefore a very costly process. Henk
If it is your Windows XP boot disk, then try this: Boot up off XP CD, select 'R' for Repair At the prompt: FIXMBR CHKDSK /P Then try rebooting

It's prolly fried board.
