overclocking PC woe's

Bloody PC, never want to do what its told and when it does it decides to muck something else up for me to find out later.

Right i've been trying to overclock my rather slow PC. For the moment i have been software overclocking rather than doing it in the BIOS as i have no clue as to what i was doing.

My old radeon 9700 pro is being looked after by Rivetuner, my CPU being whipped to its last legs (before my new pc arrives, wouldnt be trying it if there wasnt a replacement on its way) is using CPUFSB. I've also got monitoring software to keep an eye on the temps.

To cut what could be a very long story short, I decided to have a look in the BIOS to see (only to see mind you, no fiddling going on in here) what could be done. I find out that it is absoloutly nothing, only the AGP graphics slot can be altered so i quit and reboot. Now my cpu temp is reading 2 degree and the case temp is still 36 degrees.

Can anybody tell me what the hell is going on?????

I say this in the nicest way. You have a shite motherboard, and overclocking it wont be easy. Just wait till your new one arrives. Any overclock you get, you probably wont see any difference in todays games / apps as the leap is too high.

As for your cpu temp, I really wouldnt worry too much especially as your getting a new pc soon.

Overclocking does not work you say, causes unstability you say.

Well I say, you do not know what you are doing :D

Here is one of my systems , it is a 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo, I am currently running it STABLE at 3.4Ghz, and this is on air cooling ;)

That is a 1000Mhz overclock, well worth it IMO.

You need quality components and good airflow. Also, it helps if you know what you are doing and are familiar with using the system bios.

The systems consists of:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.40GHz Dual Core CPU Running @ 3.4Ghz

- Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Intel cooler

- Abit AW9D- Max (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

- Corsair 2GB PC2-6400 CAS4 (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit

- 500GB Western Digital 16MB Cache SATA-2 Hard Drive

- BFG 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 VIVO HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) DirectX 10 Graphics Card

- NEC 7173 18x DVD±RW Dual Layer LabelFlash ReWriter (Black)

- X-Fi Elite Pro sound card

- Antec NINE HUNDRED Gamers ATX Case

- BFG 1000W Next Generation Power Supply

My latest 3D mark '06 score: (11,608)

I have been an avid overclocker for many years now, having most types of systems at one point in time (Air/ water/ peltier and phase change cooling) I have always got more from each chip than the advertised speeds, in a way future proofing my systems for that much longer.

Im with Gamer. i have been overclocking for a few years too, if you source the right parts to begin with you can achieve some fantastic results. the core 2 processors have amazing head room for overclocking.

But all the other parts of the system have to be able to cope with the change (memory, graphics and cooling as well as power supply)

I have my 6400 running at 3 ghz i can't get much out of my 7950 as it is passively cooled (i wanted a quiet system).

Nice system bud.

I just did another run and managed to take this chip up to 3.7Ghz (keep in mind it is a 2.4Ghz chip and I am air cooling this)

I also overclocked the card slightly, I still have the stock cooler on that, I will swap that out for a better one soon.

What would you suggest for cooling the 8800's

I am unable to watercool them as there isnt enough room for the nozzels and they seem to be a big heat sorce.

Sorry for the thread hi-jack

Depending on the space avaliable. How about something like this:

The Thermalright HR-03-PLUS is fine but to get the best out of it you need to use a fan on it. Or in your case on them... ;)
