SupraPL
Hi. Any ideas guys? Maybe transmission oil cooler or torque converter (for example) can help to prolong the 5 speed's life? Tomasz.
Soonto_HAS_soop
I doubt a torque converter would do you any good on a Manual... Other than that I would have no idea how to beef it up, it just wasn't designed for huge power in the first place.
Digsy
Hi. Any ideas guys? Maybe transmission oil cooler or torque converter (for example) can help to prolong the 5 speed's life? Tomasz. Torque converter? On a 5-speed?
tDR
Search for an OS Giken gearset for it? That's what the SX boys do with their feeble 5-speed transmissions when going for decent power. Or convert to a 300ZX box, the equivalent in our world would be an R154 5-speed swap outta a mk3 Supra Turbo - think BL offer a conversion kit as it's a decently beefy trans without the silly cost associated with the Getrag 6-Speed. Cheers, Brian.
Stevie Boy
Torque converters for Auto transmissions only dude. A cooler would need some form of pumping of the gear oil to and fro cooler and probly wont make much difference. Maybe a rebuild with replacement gear set like straight cut gears and new synchro's these would cost a fortune plus new bearings. Dunno how available these bits would be for but reckon you'll be forking out £3500+ in bits alone! Is it worth it. Check out Pfitzner Performance Gearbox http://www.ppgearbox.com.au They do a 5sp Dog Box for W series Supra..... weighs in at £3176.26 just for the gearsets from a UK distributor! Ouch! tDR
Bloody good price but wrong listing: TOYOTA 7M-GTE / 1JZ-GTE 3 Close Ratio Gears 1st, 2nd, 3rd That uprated gearset is for the mk3 Supra R154 box!
Soonto_HAS_soop
That's for the 7M-GTE though. Not one available for a MKIV, not even the 6 speed. Beaten to it.

Lebsteif
On the supraforums is the rumour that a 5sd gearbox from a certain type of lexus is stronger than oure mkiv 5spd tranny;s. Can;t find the specific topic back but perhaps you can open a topic there as well?
Soonto_HAS_soop
Best to find a gearbox from the MKIII as has been suggested.
JODY T
Why not drive it untill it breaks! Then buy another one.. they are cheap to buy and fairly easy to get hold of... They dont take long to fit either! whilst doing that save your cash for a 6speed..

Chris Wilson
So can i do anything more than perfect maintenance for my gearbox? Basically, no, not unless you get into fancy heat treatments and stuff, but that'll cost more than a six speed conversion. One day you will see the light and sell this car
Chris Wilson
Done. The only problem is that i live in the middle of nowhere and i don't know any good car mechanic. Any more ideas lads? You may also see the light and move somewhere closer to the civilized world, where mechanics are used to fuel injection and not fixing horses and carts It's also warmer in the lowlands. Chris Wilson
I just took my car off the for sale section. Seriously Tomasz, I'd just see how the stock box lasts, with a sprung plate clutch and sensible driving it should be OK with the torque levels you are aiming for. Seriously Chris, This car is only my toy. I'm not using Supra for commuting or long trips so predictable annual mileage will be around 3-3.5k miles. I will change gearbox oil (Motul Gear 300) twice per year. 400fwhp every day (0.8bar), 450fwhp from time to time. No burnouts, no "shots from a clutch". I bought RPS Max Clutch with Street Disc. Is it a good clutch?
Chris Wilson
Has it got a sprung driven plate? They take a lot of the shock loads out in normal driving and help protect the drivetrain from harmonics.
