djskeme
Hi guys, When i start my engine from cold, it starts at 1500rpm as normal, and all sounds good. As it starts to drop, and the engine begins to warm, there is this noticable rattly/tinny kinda noise which initially sounded like a spark plug rapidly sparking.....but the car isnt misfiring at all. When I put my foot down to give it more revs...the clicking/tapping/rattle picks up and is louder and more obvious.....until the car is warm and has been driven for a bit. Then it completely goes away. I have a couple of suggestions to what i thought it could be but im less than technical 1. heatshield 2. poor spark plug connection 3. Problem with one of the cats 4. some kind of rattle from somewhere. The only one that seems feasible is the cat ... as once its fully heated up it performs as normal? Anyone offer any more help? Tricky-Ricky
Can you actually hear it from inside the car when driving, if not i suspect all you are hearing is the injectors ticking, as they are about the most noisy part of the engine. djskeme
When the engine is warm.....and running properly....the car is perfect, humms nicely and is faultless. its so loud you can hear it inside the car, and under acceleration is really really loud! Scooter
If you'd have been closer (to Guildford) i'd have popped over (if you wanted) to try to pin point (or at least eliminate) something.
djskeme
i'd say id meet you half way, but then it would be warm and wouldnt show you the noise....no one else got any ideas?
djskeme
as a development to this, it seems to be from just behind the top glove box ... which is the back right of the engine bay. It seems to go after more braking is done...could it be something to do with air in the brake system or possibly something to do with the heater matrix? all the cool air and hot air is fine. Sorry im not technical just suggestions
kieren1234
Mine used to do this but mine was the exhaust heat shild on the second cat section of the exhaust. By the sound of yours it may be something different.
mikeyb10supra
I would be 99% certain it the cat....get it out (the cat that is) as it can be detrimental the the running of the car esepcially if the inside has aged considerably and it causing a restriction to exhaust gases

But there again I was certain enough to wager a fiver on Alonso winning the British GP....
supraGZaerotop
i had this today, first time ive heard it, car been standing for 3days, started up drove straight off and had this tapping ticking noise for about a quater mile. started car later in work for the trip home and nothing, the car sounds sweet as a nut. very strange. i thought it was pinking/engine knocking, scared the crap out of me as i dont wana be fixing this thing, £££££ Edited January 14, 2010 by supraGZaerotop (see edit history)
Dazzi
This happened to me. The heatshield on the 1st cat was one rattle and the exhaust bracket attached to the gearbox was another - the metal snapped on the bolt and was rubbing together. Guest [S]oLiD
if its coming from the passenger side corner, it could be your charcoal canister, they tend to tick like crazy......

Im still betting on a cat/exhaust related noise
monkey3
Could be air \ coolant going through the heater matrix (or the power steering (but not as likely)). This sort of fits your symptoms.
supraGZaerotop
it was loud enough for my to hear it over my radio, it wasint turned up loud or nothing but still. i drove off from my home and could hear it, so i stopped and put it in neutral(autobox) and gave it a rev and could hear it very clear, sounded like a sort of tap tap tap tap tap tap. the exhaust gasket/turbo/manifold sounds stop on to me, as the supra get warm very quickly and gone in under mile if that.it is worring when you hear these strange noises. UltraFlynn
Check the stabiliser which connects to the 1st cat. Mine broke and once the car warmed up made a hell of a rattle.
R Black
Mine taps over 2k occasionally from start up, can only hear it if passenger windows open & the noise bounces of a wall or something, usually stops Posted via Mobile Device
supraGZaerotop
well its been 2 weeks and nothing, i think i know what it was. the only thing that i did before it made this noise was clean my engine bay, i sprayed a little silicone on the plastic bits to clean them up, also spray a little over the cam cover, what i think happened was spray got in thru the vent in the cam cover and on to my coilpack connectors and it was arcing slightly, im convinced it was this, been perfect ever since. dont spray any aerosol cleaners near the coilpack connectors, they dont like it. Chris Wilson
What you will have done is got some silicone on the auxiliary drive belt, which has quietened it. Some make God awful noises when they wear or become dry. If it starts again spray a touch on the belt with the engine running, it'll stop straight away.
