Jake
The HDD is my Sky+ box has started making a horrible noise. It's the poxy little one that can only store about 20 hours of programs so I thought I might as well have a bash at upgrading it to a newer and bigger one. Anyone here done this already? I'm sure there's How To guides on the net for this but thought I'd ask here for real life experiences too.
JustGav
Yup, did mine a while back when I was still using it. Works a treat actually, didn't have ANY problems with it, just make sure you pick a drive that works. I used a slightly taller drive, and I added a cooling fan just to make sure as they have a habit of overheating (The original reason for replacing the fireball drive) Still got my old sky+ system without a drive sat somewhere.. Jake
Cool. The guide I'm reading at the moment says you have to disable Instant Rewind before doing this swap. I didn't do that, I just unplugged the Sky+ box. Do you think it matters?
JustGav
If I did that I don't remember doing it. I just put the drive in, and then went into the installer menu (think it is 0 - 1 on the system) and did a system reset which formats the drive and stuff. Unlike Tivo, sky+ doesn't store it's OS on the drive, but rather in flash. The disk is purely used for video storage.
ivan
My non-computer-literate brother did his a few months ago. If he can do it you should have no problem Jake.

Thanks Ken Yeah, did it last night. Works fine. Bit noisy though. ive been thinking about doing this aswell are there any limitations? drive speed storage capacityApparently 5400rpm drives are best because they're quieter. I can;t see why you'd need more than a 160Gb HD but you can put 250 or 500gig ones in if you want.
JustGav
5400 drives are also better due to less heat being generate, the drive really does get crammed in there..
Tricky-Ricky
Anyone done this to the HD+Sky + box?

I thought there was a size limit on the size of the drives you can install in the Sky+ boxes, 160gb rings a bell, is this right? I've been thinking about doing this for a while but I need to a) get a drive and b) get the misses to stop taping so much frikkin crap to allow me to swap it out

Pabs
i'm sure i've read on some of the forums that you need to make sure you use certain models of drives, so that you don't try and pull too much power through the psu... http://world-of-digital.com/forums/ is a useful link if you haven't already looked at it
