Whats it like if you want to travel outside of Reykjavik, are the roads kept clear in winter? Are there many petrol stations and are they open 24/7. Is english widely spoken? JustGav Posted July 1, 2007 Share Posted July 1, 2007 My mom has been twice, taking school kids on a trip. She absolutely raved about it, the kids apparently loved it. Plenty to see outside the major places as well. The hot water springs were a good hit with the kids. English is not a big issue as it is widely spoken by all accounts. Outside of Rek is very nice, however cold and wet, hot springs open all year. Travelling is very easily done. She went at the end of october. I did read on the net that petrol and diesel are very cheap compared to here but I only found the one source of info and havent been able to confirm it. Very, very expensive too so make sure you have plenty of cash. But go if you can. Have travelled fairly extensively and I have to say, Iceland was second only to Galapagos imho. If I remember corretly there is just one major road around the perimeter of the country. I think some bus services on this road are suspended during the winter months. Also the interior is tricky even outside of winter so suspect it's best avoided. But you will see the vehicles they have and see that they are really geared up to cope with the weather. Was just thinking though that going when there is snow, well the lava landscapes are very dramatic being so barren and tortured and they'll be covered up. edd_t Posted July 2, 2007 Share Posted July 2, 2007 i was there Febuary this year. roads were pretty clear. but most people out there seem to have 4x4's with studded tyres, so thats gotta mean something. roads out of rekyavic where pretty much all duel carriage ways to the next town, so im sure they would keep um clear. oh and as said before, its damn expensive out there. The Blue Lagoon or something was apparantly really nice - a huge hot water spring I think that it is so blue it's surreal. They either drove round or took a coach tour, probably in Feb/March. Basicly I need to know if the main ring road around the outside will be mostly passable, as far as the large glacier to the south east and toward the north from reykjvik.
