Americans D'oh

This is the transcript of an ACTUAL radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians: We are a lighthouse. Your call.

I love when humorous myths are unknowlingly made into fact for the intended purpose of bashing. Made my day. Thanks. BTW - we joke about that clip all the time.

I'd actually heard it was the Brits in the boat and the German coast guards.... :p

They're two separate clips. One is German coast guard and British vessel and is commercial about learning better english. The other is supposedly a U.S. aircraft carrier and a Canadian lighthouse, but two Navy personnel I work with say it is bullsh*t. This wouldn't surprise me as I've heard three different versions of it.

This, I shit you not, is true.

Recently when backpacking in South Anerica I met a pissed up American in my hostel who had a disliking for the English. Whilst slurring he turned to me and said:

"Anyway, why is it you English named all your towns after our towns" :D

I couldn't believe my ears - niether could this other English guy playing pool who turned round in disbelief and said to the Yank

"What? We have pubs older than your country"

Perfect response. :)

What do you say in response to those examples, other than...

Yep.. there are ignorant people in every country. Unfortunately, they breed and travel and take it upon themselves to insult those, many of whom, come from the very countries from which most Americans are descendants. A poor representation of a nation as a whole to say the least. Need I break into stories of Mallorca, Sardinia, Sicily, Turkey, Japan, and my home country, (which I may add, is not all that different from England, and yes, much younger, respectfully). I've met many an outspoken traveller boasting rediculous claims and biased opinions. I think all that matters is that we are similar people with similar problems and a long tradition of choosing to be allies and friends.
