michael
I've had a google but I can't seem to find the info I want - does anyone know how many miles you would drive if you did a lap of the mainland UK while attempting to keep the sea in view as much as possible? (going on B roads when you can rather than taking the bigger option) I can see a few charity site where people are doing it but can't see any mention of how many miles it would be. I've read that the actual coast length is around 7760 miles but obviously there isn't a road all the way around each little bit - any pub quiz trivia fans that can help? I'd love to drive it, I probably never will, just curious at the moment, I've haven't been higher than Glasgow in Scotland but might be working up in Nairn next month, I might do a bit then So much of the UK I haven't seen, mainly because to do it in the Supra would cost more than an all-inclusive at a 5* resort somewhere sunny
Jezz
I think i read somewhere the coast is actually 12000 miles or something??

I saw one site that was around that but I think it included all the islands that are classed under the UK too - a lot of miles!

merckx
Do you watch the Coast programme on a Sunday night? It's very good. They said it was 7000 odd miles long.
Supragal
That is a nice idea, would you sleep in the Supra too?

I watch Coast but mainly repeats on odd SKY channels, I always see m to miss the more up to date ones - I was watching it today, that's what got me thinking. I've always had a real love of the sea and being able to combine it with my love of driving would make a great break for me. Is this where you tell me that it says how long the coastline is on every episode?
JamesG
The British coastline is infinitely long. Don't you lot know fractal theory?
michael
That is a nice idea, would you sleep in the Supra too? I don't think I could do it in the Supra to be honest, I don't like camping either, maybe an estate car with net curtains and an airbed. b_have
Supra and strategic hotels for me I did a lap of the Isle of White on a JetSki for charity (took 2 days!)

Rob
Supra and strategic hotels for me I did a lap of the Isle of White on a JetSki for charity (took 2 days!) Did you have to carry it, or use a trolley? I like watching Coast, but mainly for Alice Roberts, she can examine my anatomy any day, she can extrapolate my anthropomorphic history whenever she likes, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.... We make a trip up to the Isle of Mull for the rally in October and it always amazes me how beautiful the views/coast/scenery are up that way. Its a trip you HAVE to do! http://file025b.bebo.com/1/large/2006/11/04/01/87384362a2451206288b837574865l.jpg http://file022b.bebo.com/0/large/2006/11/04/01/87384362a2451229805b829563590l.jpg http://file019b.bebo.com/13/large/2006/11/04/01/87384362a2451235450b607424395l.jpg The pics give you an idea of what it was like last year in Oct - have hundreds of pics from our trips up that way over the years if you fancy seeing more. But anyway back on topic - certainly sounds like a fair trip!

colsoop
Ordanance survey is your friend. http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/freefun/didyouknow/ Sounds like a nice idea for a trip, weather dependent
michael
Ordanance survey is your friend. http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/freefun/didyouknow/ Sounds like a nice idea for a trip, weather dependent So: "The coastline length around mainland Great Britain is 11,072.76 miles" But that still doesn't help me with my question about how far it would be by road - sounds like it's going to be a lot though, my Supra has only done 4000 miles in the past year so there is no chance of me using that I think it might have to be done in stages before I die. Ewen
Its a great idea. A Romatic grand tour of our beautiful coastline. My problem would be that I'd want to stop at every place to look around...it would take years.

Rob
I saw some TV prog with an elderly couple who were doing this, bit by bit, in a camper van. It wasn't continuous but they would do a few weeks at a time, every year.
