Crank pulley failure?

Damn it :( Was on the way to my mates stag do this evening and the car suddenly lost al power (dash light still lit, but engine 'died' and steering went heavy).

Pulled it over, and it seemed to idle, but after 20 seconds or so it died completely and would not restart.

After letting it cool down for a bit it did restart, but with a 'squeal' from the front which sounded like a slipping fan belt. It idled okay, but gave the same squealing noise and momentary power loss when revving the engine. Shortly after it died again and will not restart.

The only thing that looks odd is the crank damper, if I grip the top (outer) part it moves a few mm around on the central part. I'm guessing this is the classic crank damper failure?

Yeah, thats my thinking too, even if it's not the cause it's going to need replacing anyway.

If it's moving then it's gone. Are you at home/far from home?

I just got back to Reading with the car on a tow truck. I was only a few miles away from you but just wanted to get the car back home.

Strange (If its the pulley de-laminating) that it caused the engine to die. Wondering if the pulley has come loose on the taper and moved forward' date=' releasing the cambelt pulley and/or star wheel?[/quote']

Yeah when mine failed my engine kept on happily running. Albeit with the belt squealing like a stuck pig. The rubber on mine had perished and delaminated.

It doesn't make sense does it... The pulley itself isn't moving forward, it just wobbles a few mm but stays in the place it should be. I guess it's going to be a case of reaplcing the pulley then trying again.

Thats Doug :) To be honest at the time I totally forgot about you being so close.

Pictures!!

There's not a lot to see though, it just looks like a normal crank pulley. I'll try and get a video (plus my digi camera is bust!) of the movement as it should be clearer.

It won't be until Monday as I'm leaving for Chester first thing tomorow provided I can find a hire car.

Glad your home safe mate.

Things to check

- That crank sensor is securely fastened into casing

- The restiance of the crank and cam sensors are in range

- wiring back to ecu is good

- Check map sensor is in range also as the connector was always looking abit dodgy

That you have PETROL in car lol

I've got a spare pulley here if you're desperate Darryl

(lol "Desperate Darryl" - sounds like a comic book character)

and a home made crank locking tool. Gimme a shout if you need it and I'll bring it round.

The alloy hub may have cracked, or the whole hub is loose on the crankshaft, if it's been loose for a while it will have removed material from the nose of the crank and buggered the keyway in the crank. Repair is a full engine out job and a new crank and bearings. Hopefully just the hub is cracked. Don't run it at all, just get it fixed.

Yes, I'm desperate alright! :D That would be superb if you could Jake. Are you in the area next week (I guess you start the new job soon)

Thanks Chris, I haven't heard of this before but will take a careful look at the pulley once it's off. If it is cracked, is it likely to be visible to the eye, or would it need Xray or checking under microscope?

No probs. When do you need it for?

Great :) Well to be honest, ASAP, but whenever you have time will be good for me! I was going to go to Spain for the week but might cancel that now considering the airport situation...

I'm just glad we changed mine when doing the timing belt, as it had hairline fractures around the middle part.

Hope it's just a replace it and go job D! As Chris has pointed out, these kinda failures can be nasty.

Cheers,

Brian.

Chris has got me worried now. In the last few months it's been making a bit of a metallic clattering sound on start up. Not at any other time though. I had assumed it was the tensioner.

This is why I like seeing Chris's input in threads... but not my own
