Any plate type LSD with a worthwhile amount of preload will cause tyre skip under certain conditions. The wifes bone stock Jeep Grand Cherokee does it horrendously, Chrysler got so many complaints they came up with an oil additive to kill some of the inter plate friction for those that wanted silence (but wer happy to be stuck in a field with no traction, AKA the Chelsea Tractor brigade)

The TRD one is about as civilised as a plate LSD gets, IMO.

sounds like it, but i\'ve been looking around the forums and quite a few people report it being smooth with little to no noise so it may vary depending on factors like age, condition, oil used....

im no expert, and im just hoping not to scarifice too much comfort in switching from an open diff to a TRD plate type

Just out of interest, how can you tell it's got a TRD diff rather than the stock Toyota torsen diff?

Jack up the back wheels, in neutral, turn one back wheel, if it's a plate type both wheels will turn in the SAME direction. To know what makle of plate LSD you either need a good boroscope or take the back off the casing

wel there is no noise really out of it just seems like the back of the car is hopping if that makes any sense to you

you can feel a hopping type sensation cos both wheels want to spin at the same speed but obviously the inside wheel is spinning slower. i know what you mean as i was concerned with my first experience of it but i asure you it is fine. to make it more comfortable i used to use less accelerator when cornering slowly and that virtually eliminated any snatching
