jim_supra
The mother and child spaces at my local Asda have a really bizarre picture on them, rather than the standard parent leading a child by the hand they look like 2 people body-popping. Me and the missus often park there, jump out, cut some shapes and then wander in to the store. I can't stop laughing at the image I have in my head of that. Chris Wilson
When we first moved out here I had to make several trips to the local council offices about a planning application. It was always a demoralising and frustrating visit, I find some local government officers to be clones of Hitler with a few genes from Josef Mengele thrown in. On one such trip someone was parking up in one of their parking bays when a typical figure of enpowerment saw this gentleman heading on foot AWAY from the council offices doors, and felt obliged to interrogate him on such a blatant sleight of the parking restriction signs. When asked if he was using the parking arrangements for other than council business this elderly gentleman retorted that whilst he had every intention of visiting their good offices directly he felt obliged for a stiffener in the pub opposite, before facing "that wart faced ugly red headed bitch in environmental health" again. I last saw the council office employee in a state of apoplexy, probably in need of oxygen, reeling from what to him must have been an offence under God knows how many sections of council anti discrimination laws. It made me titter though...

dangerous brain
On the subject of children and mother slots I just don 't understand why they put them near the doors. There is absolutely no reason why once disembarked from the vehicle a mother/father/guardian of any amount of children cannot then walk to the store in question. If they put the slots about halfway down the parking area then that would be very advantageous. Why do we parents need these slots? For no other reason than kids don't understand the concept of not slamming your car door into the car next to it when they want to get out (something I would not be happy with my sprog doing). As a ickle baby type of individual they are a right PITA to get out of a high level 4X4 never mind a supra for instance. You ask any of the guys on here that are recently with child with a supra and ask them how far you have to open that door to get said child out of the car. Way further than the dismal effort of a parking space that tesco's provide in cattle class thats for sure.

Spot on, and yeah I agree with the idea of putting them a little further away.. means people wouldn't use them for the sake of it UNLESS they really needed to. Guest ColB
Generally Kidie spaces at supermarkets are due to sick individuals, who try to take other people's children, it allows parents to put the trolley back, and stay close to the kids / car, and safer than a kid running out in front of cars.. saying that I never used to use them with my kids, but I gree, you need to open doors wide to get the kids out.. I have also had the verbals directed at me, when parked in disabled space, after returning to car from putting trolley back, then politely telling them where to .... off, and look at the wheelchair in the boot, and the disabled lady in the passenger seat, that I had just helped into the car before taking trolley back. Nothing wrong with refering to people in the same way they do, i.e black, gay, white etc, more often than not it is not the black, gay or white person that has problems, but some interfering do-gooder stirring up trouble.. If you feel hard done by, due to discrimination, tell your manager / boss, or anyone else they are discriminating against you, as long as you have a point, you should see their reaction. Check the women only car insurance, and tell them it's discrimination, and quote 20-25000 miles a year, 20 years without a claim, and see how that makes a woman with previous claims safer... Basically you just need to get on with your own life and stop feeling hard done by
lambertpig
i agree with you there, they may be able to do the job but id rather the person was selected for his skills rather than his skin colour my mate went to join the fire brigade and got told they wasnt recruiting at the mo but a week later there was 20 new recruits and not one was white, apparently they had been pulled up for not trying to recruit ethnic minorities that is so true i am a fireman and have been told that the government has set targets for 1 in 5 firefighters to be women in the next 5 years.out of these 5 one needs to be from an ethnic minority.its stupid because they simply can get asian women to join its not in there culture.if you are a 5ft 8 stone thai girl with half a brain i you would get the job without question a 6ft 15 stone white male powerhouse would struggle. one last point who would you prefer carrying you out of a smoke filled building if you were overcome from smoke

RedM
Helloooo You know those people who join the army and then express surprise, shock, and indignation about being shot at and their lives are in danger? That's people who have kids and expect everyone else to work around them. C'mon, your life gets more difficult, what a shocker, you knew it was coming - don't try and make it easier by expecting special treatment. -Ian Excellent post. If only I could get the stupid bint at work to read it. She can't start on time because her 14 year old has to 'go to school'. WTF?
michael
She can't start on time because her 14 year old has to 'go to school'. WTF? We have one of those, late in every day, leaves early and generally goes home a few days each month due to child illness, he also smokes so gets a free break on the hour every hour and he's an ass. boombastictiger
However, I do see your point with regards the usual chavvy suspects, I myself actually get arsey and shout at people who park in disabled bays when they are blatantly not. Same as the social system in this country, just used and abused by those who REALLY don't need it. Sometimes I park in disabled bays, only if theres alot of them and there all empty. I mean the amount of people who have fake disabled badges and/or use there parents disabled badges is unreal!! If they can have the luxury then so should I!! You can buy a disabled badge for about £500 these days..(I dont have one btw..to embarassing)...
tbourner
Agree with Red above, ref IanC's post, it IS a choice to have kids, and you have to accept that they'll get in the way. If you think at any time that your kids will cause you hassle when going shopping/to work/to the pub/to the cinema/any other activity, then don't have any - it's a pretty simple choice really. And another thing, what's with not being able to hit children any more? Surely we can distinguish between a kid being naughty and being smacked on the leg and a kid being abused by his/her parents? Don't expect everyone else to mould around your new kiddy filled lives, if your kid opens the car door into the car next to it then smack it and tell it to respect other peoples property!!! Couple friends of ours were talking about having kids, he said they can't afford it, and his brother (who was there at the time) has just had a kid and said that he could claim this and that - I felt like smacking him!! I refuse to have children until I know I can deal with it off my own back. As for political correctness, if the stuff mentioned in this thread is true about the fire brigade etc. then it's all gotten far too daft already, and I see it in a similar way to the whole immigration thing that comes up every so often (which I'll try not to get into again), we should just set up a rulebook to follow based on whichever thing it is to which entry is wanted, and everyone that has a go has an equal opportunity to get through - every single human being should be classed as a single item with no differences, if you happen to have been involved in a terrible yachting accident and have no arms or legs, it's unlikely you're going to qualify as an air sea rescue member!! No it's not your fault, but it's not my fault I'm a rubbish driver, I don't whinge and moan that I should be allowed to race in WRC though do I!!! RedM
I was asked who the new Labour leader was. I said "Gordon Brown". I was asked who lives at 11 Downing Street, I said "The Chancellor of the Exchequer". I was asked where the Government meet. I said "The Houses of Parliament" Then I was told I was being politically correct!
Charlotte
Slightly off topic but I agree about the people at work with kids thing. There is a woman who works here, part time, so only on a Monday and Friday. Mysteriously her kids are only ever ill on a Monday or Friday and not during the rest of the week. It's odd. Class One
When some have you "having children is bad" bashing brigade have finished....... Unfortunately being a parent means sometimes you have to put them first. When they're ill and stuff like that then someone has to be there for them. Parents who work sometime don't have a choice about it, they have to just like those without kids, to pay the sodding bills and keep a roof over your head etc. Whilst I grant the some people abuse the syetm, not everyone does. And having children is not necessarily a choice for some. What a very blinkered view to take that it is. You never know what life may throw at you. Some of us frequent this forum "for the grace of God go I." Sometime life happens and people need help. For those who don't need that help, think of yourselves as being the lucky ones. Some people will exploit things that can be made available to them. There always will be that minority.

Sorry man but that is the biggest heap of old cack I have ever read. If a parking space that is large enough to open a door fully is made available instead of the cram them in like sardine make as much money from a space as possible parking spaces then a car door won't be opened into another. I'll put it another way, kids don't understand that kicking open the car door is a bad thing until after they've done it, probably a few times before the realisation sinks in. Do you want it to be your door on the receiving end? To further my argument here you'd be about 95% correct in saying that almost all would knob off and leave said door with a huge dent in it. So a bit of forethought and understanding goes a long long way. I'm not asking anyone to do me any favours because I have children just use their brains a bit and try and make things a bit easier so that we can mutually get along nicely. BTW if your parents had of had the same attitude as alot of people in the UK have, you wouldn't exist. Also with the home UK nationals having little or no kids for these reasons and these visiting from abroad on an illegal basis people having gazzilions of them the concerned UK nationals will just breed themselves out of existence.
