An advert like this would really make me think about speeding again!! ;)

I actually think that the shock ones used in the UK do make me think a lot more about when to drive fast etc. I personally think that apart from showing what happens when someone is run over (for example the one where the little girl is knocked down), they should also show the heartache is causes loved ones.

Just on a side note though, its been long time since I have driven a non perfomance car and recently I bought a 1.5D Saxo for an economical runaround. I had forgotten how crap some cars are and can really appreciate the 30MPH limit in built up area's. The brakes on the Saxo are absolutely shocking and I can see why there are so many accidents when you consider how many crap cars there are on the road.

Exposure to "computer games, modern media ... and horror films" had desensitised many young males to the violent images of those campaigns, RTA spokesman John Whelan told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper

boll** i hate the fact they always blame games and films, its their clause for everything

Think the only way to stop speeding is to give you (us) an injection that makes doing 0-*** less thrilling and to take away the competetive instinct in us.

Men (mainly) have raced since we only had horses, and men (mainly) will race anything that we get our hands on... cars, boats, planes, even getting to the moon first !

They have absolutely no chance, even the people who make and police the laws speed (look how many cops get caught - and let off for speeding).

The only way would be to chop our bo**ocks off.

Apologies to the GirlRacers out there, but you have to admit you are in a very low minority - but we love you...

And another thing (on a roll now)...

Even if they put on pics of mangled bodies on the TV & posters at the side of the road it would'nt help.

Now we have the internet, we sadly have all seen pics of mangled bodies and the damage we can do to ourselves and others - we still speed.

I'm sure we have all seen a bad accident on the road which makes us slow down for all of five minutes, then off we go again !

It's one of the few thrilling things that we can do in our safe little lives...

That is unless it's just me that's sad and has a little willy ?

No amount of adverts and posters will stop speeding. How many people have seen those sort of adverts and thought 'wow that adverts horrible'' then the next advert comes on (which is usually for cillit bang) and it's completely forgotten about.

The only way that speeding will be stopped is to limit the cars speed electronically, and that is not going to happen anytime soon. (thankfully)

You're right Ark, it's a stupid advert. Can't see it having any effect. If you were speeding along and some bird did that finger thing to you, would you really care?

Gatso is right too, it's all in our nature.

The ad is not as daft as some may think.

It is a bit more manipulative than average, in a sneaky way that you think 'bah, I can see right through this' and then your subconscious starts changing your behaviour giving you some lame excuses.

Sneaky, a bit like the older ads of TV licence (radars, people picked up while on a boat in the middle of the lake etc)

Such a campaign could be effective if it were persistent enough and was aimed at the size of the *engine* (or the car) rather than 'speed'. So I wouldn't expect miracles from it, but it's a nice try...

This sort of psycological 'warfare' is a minor hobby of mine, I wonder if there are others here knowledgeable on the subject.

Yes... I sell stuff for a living..

We all sell stuff for a living, even when not realising it.

Selling products, services, our time, our physical presence etc...;)

Are you seriously into marketing, with studies etc?

Another angle is from the 'Derren Brown' or 'real hustle' perspective, where manipulation is more obvious:sly:

Speeding itself doesn't cause accidents. Its inappropriate use of speed that contributes to accidents.

Devils advocate but the child running out in front of the car causes the accident not the driver driving down the street. Yeah OK if the driver going down the street was doing so at less than 30 mph then the crump isn't going to be as bad as at 40 mph (logical and all that). So instead of investing tens of thousands of pounds in speed cameras outside a school (which by the fact they catch so many people proves they don't actually slow people down) and pissing the general public off why don't they rail the road off and put in underpasses or overwalkways with the money.

Personally I try my very best to keep my speed down in 30 limits which here in Holland is difficult as its 30 KMPH not MPH. Speeding in town aint clever. One of the things that slammed that message home to me was one day when some berk threw his car door open and jumped out when I had a car coming against me. Basically I had no-where to go and all but pinned the muppet to his door. Had I of been speeding that muppet woulda gone splat across his door because I simply wouldn't have had time to stop.

People with common sense can determine the difference between when its safe to go a bit quicker and when its not. Problem is the law has to make allowances for those of us that lose our common sense (we are late for work mind on other things etc etc) or simply just dont have any and enforce a lowest common denominator attitude to the whole thing.

IMO There is too much focus speeding, and not enough focus on educating pedestrians, better driver standards etc.

Also, how many adverts do you see on TV aimed at pedestrians and road safety these days?

Yes, speeding is a problem, but surely pedestrians not paying attention to the roads is just as much of a problem.

Speeding on public roads and putting other road users lives in danger is wrong, no question. But the fact remains, driving fast is an amazing feeling. How are you going to combat the thrills of speed with a naff advert like this?

I rarely use the little finger gesture to men as it is I think, an "I can't think of anything smart to say" insult. Hardly a skillfully crafted witty put down worth getting upset about so I can't see how the ad can be effective (unless fellas are really that sensative??!) ;)

I've said it before on here (a bit more long winded though), but if there was a factory with containers moving around on tracks carrying tons of material there's no way in hell any pedestrians would be allowed to roam around, especially not kids!! Even if the safety team had installed brakes and sensors on the fronts of the containers you'd still have to wear hard hats and stick to strick safety rules - why is it any different when there's a human driving the things? We need to stop people running out in the road, people need to understand how dangerous cars are!! Don't slow the drivers down, stop the bloody pedestrians from being so dumb!!!
