Coolant Change Query

Scooter

Recommended Posts

Bear with me on this one as its got a point (i think!) but i may ramble a little.

Regular oil (engine and gearbox)changes and Brake fluid are essential, for obvious reasons ie to avoid accelerated wear and also potential loss of brakes.

What however are the real advantages of a coolant change?

part of the point i'm getting at is that one part of my education that actually stuck in brain was to do with corrosion and how for example in a gas central heating system if the old water could be reused that would be better than fresh as it is already saturated by, say Iron and wouldn't cause further corrosion of the iron in the system ie rad's etc.

Now i suspect modern coolant has corrosion inhibitors in it but i'm just curious as to whats the down side to extended coolant usage, as its not as obvious to me as the previously mention fluids.

Scoot, as far as I am aware the fourlife does contain corrosion inhibiters as with most modern coolants, if your coolant (fourlife) is past its best I have heard it turns a brown colour.

I would imagine that flushing/changing the coolant is also good practice and keeps things fresh.

Cheers and thats what the party line is for sure, like you, i've heard that Brown = past it

but what i can't see is what exactly is the downside if its still running at normal temp etc? what does the new coolant add that the old no longer has, if you get my drift?
