I have recently bought a 93 Jap import N/A Supra and would like to change the Cam Belt as I have no way of knowing how old it is.

Can anyone advise me if I should just change the cam belt or if I should change the tensioner as well?

Obviously cost is one issue I have to consider but I want to do the right thing.:help:

Thanks for everyones input, I think I knew I should change the tensioners as well, just thought I would see what other people thought, think I will get standard belts from Toyota.

while you are there, replace the cam belt tensioner too yes.

u can get the belt and tensioner for around 60quid

Would you like to tell me where?????

Belt was around £40 alone and the tnsioners was quoted at £90 from Toyota. Good job my tensioner was still OK at 200K.

Its as Trev has said.......

basically in lots of engines the space the piston occupies in its stroke is shared with the space the valves occupy during theirs.

The timing belt ensures they are never in the shared space at the same time! Snapped belt and its usual for them to come into contact causing often serious damage.........

In the supra (and in fact most toyota/lexus) engine there is no 'shared' space so no contact is possible...........
