Jake
the pulley hasnt broken its still intact I bet it's not. If you do a search for threads with Crank Pulley in the Titles, and Show Results as Threads you will find everything you need to know. Good luck Dave. RobSheffield
Even though it may not look broken it will be, the 2 halves will have split Im afraid its time for a new pulley. IIRC Rad needs to be removed, you will also need a special took to retorque the new one down.
Dave
where does it break it looks like the pulley nut has just come loose .and the pulley has sliped forward . are the two pulleys on the crank joined then? timing belt pulley and the front one ?? where can i get a new pulley MR T or does someone on here do them. Jake
The pulley has a bolt rather than a nut, Dave. It's supposed to be a single piece pulley but sometimes the outer ring separates from the inner part. Can you take a photo of it for us to see better? flukey-lukey
£220 (ish) plus VAT from toyota or circa £140 from 'Nic the import pimp' if you can wait 5/6 weeks
uk-rich
you can leave the rad on
Class One
And as you've an auto you should be able to get the nut off using the starter trick and do it up by jamming up the viscous coupling with a suitable wedge shaped tool at the back of the engine. Jake
I think Doug means Torque Converter rather than Viscous Coupling.

Class One
That'll be the one Jake. To get the bolt off the crank pully damper you'll find that it is done up FT. As yours is an auto you'll need to jam on a socket and wrench and wedge that into something solid like the ground so it wont moveit and have someone else turn the car over for about 0.2 of a second. That should loosen it up enough to get off. To do the new one up tight enough, as its an auto you can't lock up the engine via the gearbox. Therefore at the back you'll find the TC, using a wedged shaped long enough tool you should be able to jam that up whilst doing up the crank damper. This will need to be done up very FT. It's a bit of a pain, but if you know, or your mate knows what he's doing the he should be able to manage it. Don't buy a cheap damper. Only buy a MR T one. RedM
I've just bought one of these and planned to do it myself. I think I might just take it to one of those men in overalls. They need to do my rear suspension arms too.

Its got to be worth a try using this method, loads of people on here have done it this way and it's been fine. But in my case it wouldnt budge using the starter. I then tried several air guns at tyre places and still wouldn't budge, I ended making a tool. Chris sz also had simular problems I recall. Got to be worth a try first, but be prepared to find, borrow, make or steal a tool. Sims toyota in Northampton dont even have a tool! They rely soley on the method Doug describes, but even they end up taking the car to a lexus dealer who has the correct tool sometimes. There is a guy on here who will lend you a tool, he does it by post. If you get stuck let me know and I will find his details.
markssupra
Dave, pm me if you need to borrow tool to lock crank pulley. It just bolts on the front and locks against chassis rail in engine bay. Click on the crank pulley link in my sig and you will find a picture of it.

Jake
Has yours split then Dave? (I may have missed an update)
molak
my bottom pulley has done the same, it splits from the rubber vibration damper in the middle. i got new pulley from ebay for £30 light weight one!
markssupra
Molak, not sure those lightweight ones are any good though. The toyota one is designed to dampen out the crankshaft vibrations. Gets ready to be
garethr
Sims Toyota in Northampton don't even have a tool! ......they end up taking the car to a Lexus dealer who has the correct tool......That's unbelievable at the prices main dealers charge. The Toyota SST costs about 110 quid IIRC. They must figure they don't see enough JZs. Cheapskates!
Rob
Take Markssupras tool into the dealership with you then ask "Where's your tool?" (Service Manager) "What f@*()ing tool?" I'll leave you to imagine the rest...
