Grrrrr.... Can ZR rated tyres be repaired?

My luck is rubbish!

Coming home from work, felt the car was 'out of sorts' and had that sinking feeling.......yep....put a nail through the front tyre :badmood:

Can anyone tell me if tyre places will repair ZR rated tyres....the bloody thing has got loads of miles left in it yet and I will be well pissed off if I have to buy a new one!

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a nail through mine last week, near the outer wall, guy said a "Factory " repair could be carried out for £15, it has to be sent away, then good as new - had a patch fitted 1st though (im a tight b&%^ard, but was still losing pressure, so will drop it in this week and let you know if its as good as he states

Indeed, I had a "factory repair" done on one of my 2 week old Goodyear F1 rears once. You couldn't even see where the repair had been done when it came back and it survived lots of drag strip and high speed runs :D

Not sure I'd be entirely happy with a patched repair though.

I thought the vulcanising plug/patch repair was meant to reduce the speed rating of the tyre? What to I can't remember, possibly drops 2 ratings, or to somewhere in the region of 120 mph????

I think this is due to the loss of cord strength where the hole has to be drilled to insert the plug. This unbalances the internal forces within the tyre (in simple terms) that hold the tyre together at extreme speeds.

I certainly wouldn't trust a 150mpg plus autobahn stormer with a plugged tyre.

A factory fixed tyre may be different??

The 'factory repair' sounds the best bet.
