michael
I'm really sad. True. But back to the thread, how do you feel about Bernard passing?
Charlotte
True. But back to the thread, how do you feel about Bernard passing? It's terrible.
Paul
Class bloke, will be well missed. Made me chuckle a few times and wound the f*ck out of all the lefties. You lot taught at school to hate guys like this then? OK so his jokes were far from PC ( ) but it's all about free speech and he made a reasonable living out of it and his club so not everyone hated him;)

Jive
Quote on that BBC page "Like him or loathe him there was no way of ignoring him" Excuse me, there is, turn off the tv, turn over the tv or just don't go and see him and if someone's bought tickets for you, rip them up and throw 'em back in their face. Glad he's dead
Angarak
I thought he was funny myself, and when you saw shots of the laughing crowds they werent all white skin headed racist BNP nazis, there was always a mix of races all enjoying themselves. Some people are too thin skinned these days.

I think in his time he was a great comedian, but the world has moved forward or maybe backwards in some cases!! H.
ivan
I must admit, it's been a long time since I saw news of someone's death and thought "about time too".

Some people are too thin skinned these days. True they weren't all "white skin headed racist BNP nazis", some of them were just ignorant simpletons. Which one were you? And the 'thin skinned' people you refer to are often the minorities who have put up with racial abuse all their lives. Abuse is abuse, whether it's said with a smile and a wink by someone like Manning, or on the end of a boot with a skinhead at the other end of it. MONKEYmark
Class bloke, will be well missed. Made me chuckle a few times and wound the f*ck out of all the lefties. You lot taught at school to hate guys like this then? OK so his jokes were far from PC ( ) but it's all about free speech and he made a reasonable living out of it and his club so not everyone hated him;) here here he was one of the old school comedians.all this political corectness has gone way ott.he was booked to appear in pontefract near racecourse at a pub. to me when i see people who are meant to be funny i cant see the humour myself.where i can laugh out loud to peter kay phoenix nights and max and paddy.also like dom jolly and dennis pennis.and borat too and a league of gentlemen is strange but funny. everybody likes different things. what other comedians do you all like? Havard
So racist humour is ok then? Yes or no, let's keep this simple Have you got the opener for my can of worms!! I do appreciate your point Hogmaw but do you not think that this has now gone a bit far. I think if a joke is delivered correctly, tastefully and not repeatedly at an individuals expense then that is perfectly acceptable. I have seen comedians such as Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock have a go at white people and never once been offended! I think that almost any subject is open to humour but there are obviously certain subjects that NO ONE would find funny! There is a balance. But I feel that the scales have now been tipped too far for my liking! H.
hogmaw
No it hasn't gone too far and I am not afraid to speak on this which is an important issue to me, even if it's a laughing matter to everyone else, and therein lies my point. Manning had his moments, he made some very funny jokes that I laughed at myself (like that hunting one somebody posted earlier) but the racist stuff leaves me cold. Why did a talented funnyman have to resort to such stuff? He was nothing but a bully, making jokes at other peoples expense. Eddie Murphy on the other hand, has made some jokes by laughing AT the bullies, ie white people, and that is how he can get away with it, while Manning can't. There is tons of funny stuff in this world which doesn't have to resort to racism to make people laugh.

mattanna
Eddie Murphy, who is brilliant makes jokes about white people, but this is not classed as racist(he is laughing at the bullies), most jokes are either about fat peole, thin people, the welsh, the english the scottish the chinese, the irish etc etc etc or even about disasters that have happened in the world, manning was close to the bone like chubby brown , but i do not believe they incited violence against anybody like wise i would not have gone to see them it was not law that you had to listen to them, the biggest joke of all is this society we live in, where criminals and paedophiles etc have more rights than those who do nothing wrong
MaveriK
I feel quite sick that people here have welcomed his death. Did i miss something and he is actually a war criminal/mass mugger and not a comedian? Yes his act was close to the bone but if you didnt like it dont go, dont watch his TV shows etc then he will not be able to wind you up. I dont watch leftie programs or programs about benefit fraud etc as it gets up my nose, my choice, my opinion. And dont give me the crap that its ok for black comics to rib white people but not the other way round, its either a fair world or not. Yes, he took the mickey out of folk but i dont remember him wishing or thanking for someones passing. Which is the more evil? RIP Bernard, you gave alot of people pleasure. Paul
Racism is only funny if you are white. So racism is a one way thing then in your book? Goes to show what alot of bollocks the word is and what it's come to stand for, a free meal ticket for those that want to use it to their advantage. Monkeymark: Seems we have the same sort of taste mate, Peter Kay is a genius, great stuff from him all the time and the others you mention too, Little Britain is funny but all a bit 'samey' now. League of Gentleman is great too! If it's funny I laugh, I don't give a shit if it's regarding somone pink, black, thin, fat or in a bloody wheelchair, I don't analyse the joke or give a toss who it's about, it's a joke and if I don't find it funny then I don't watch it. Simple really ain't it:d
RedM
So racism is a one way thing then in your book? No, it's not a 'one way thing in my book'. My stepmother is black and she hates 'those pakis'. I've often pointed out that she wouldn't stand racism directed at her so why should she be racist to others. Personally, I don't have a racist bone in my body. To me, racism is like an ankle high hurdle that some people just can't seem to get over.
Ewen
He was a player when TV had hit shows like Love Thy Neighbour, Till Death Us Do Part and The Black and White Minstrel Show. Marmalade jars had gollywogs on them. Acceptable and funny back then, but times change and entertainment moved on. Mannings act carried on regardless, which says more about his lack of talent and creativity than the man himself.

Paul
Simple, yes. See my comment about simpletons above. I'm just being honest, most people are so hung up with being PC these days, to me if it's a joke being said that I find funny then I'll laugh and not get hung up on the implications of it. It's words, that's all, in recent years the trend of being PC and the amount in the media regarding incorrect behavior has done more damage to people living in harmony than ever. A prime example being your comments above, not willing to listen to any other view on the subject but instead try look down on me:) Still, life goes on
