Tyres and Split rims.....

Trig

Recommended Posts

Every couple of weeks or so i have to pump my tyres up. I read somewhere on here that the split rims could cause the air loss somehow. Also said id need to take the tyres off and use sealant round the inside of the rim. I think i may of read it on here but i cant find the thread.

Anyway would this sort my problem if i used the sealant??? :conf:

Only if the rims aren't sealed properly.

I've got 18" Blitz split rims and don't have any problems at all.

I looked into getting them refurbed and was told that there was a turn around of 5 days, 1 day to do the rim and 4 to ensure they had been properly sealed after the work.

Have a word with Fat Wheel Refurb (01795585111). I didn't get them done in the end so can't vouch for their work but they were very helpful.

I've recently had my 3 piece Work Alloys refurbished at a cost of £250 per wheel.

The whole process took almost three months in total (there was a lot of chroming involved). When the wheels finally came back one of the wheels was going down to 9psi. I took it too a local tyre depot who tested it in their water tank and the leak was coming from one of the seals on the wheel, I therefore took the wheel back.

They kept the wheel for another two weeks and when I got it back it was flat again within 24 hours.

The wheel went back again (they kept it for another two weeks) and has now been back on the car for a couple of months. It does however still lose air although only slowly. I need to pump it up each weekend and it currently loses about 10psi each week.

Bearing in mind that for the price I paid I could probably have got a cheap set of 18" single piece alloys I am still not sure if refurbishing the wheels was a good idea. The car was off the road for most of the summer and the whole process was a nightmare.

Whether I get them refurbished again or buy a new set will depend on how long the refurbished alloys last before they start peeling and tarnishing again.

I've had trouble with my split rims since i got them on the car...

My fix was...

Take tyre's off...

Cut the old seal out from the groove inside with a stanley knife as much as you can and then try to get a smooth sort of finish (I used some sandpaper)...

Get some silicone and squirt it in the groove you just cleared out.

This has worked for me...

The only downside being when they take the tyres back off they sometimes use a crow bar and cut back through the seal so you may need to do it again when you have your tyres changed..

Craig.
