JustGav
Having phoned up for a quote I can say I'm a little shocked... Example.. K-reg NA manual(import). 31yr old driver, 8 points (3 sp30 - 2006 and 5 sp50 - 2007), 5 years NCB, 10000 mile per year. The quote came in at £691/year... Now that just seemed a little high, given that 2 years ago I was paying £450 for the aerotop auto with 3 years NCB. I was hoping for something a bit better than that because I would be including the aerotop single on the policy once it was complete. The only thing I can assume is I've mentioned that I'd be using it for business, but would I need to specifiy business if I'm just driving it to work and back and NOT actually for business purposes? EDIT : Quote has been amended, look at the bottom of the thread....
paul_y3k
just driving it to and from your place of work normally gets covered under socal domestic cover. At least it does on all my policys
Snooze
Have to make sure it covers, social, domestic AND commuting. I had to get this added to my Sky policy.
JustGav
Hmmm, been looking at some threads, it seems that they aren't always the cheapest... UNLESS they have to match... What is the point of having an insurer that will match provided WE do all the leg work phoning around??????
mawby
What is the point of having an insurer that will match provided WE do all the leg work phoning around??????Then we would have no club insurer. I bet if we switched official insurers then people wound phone them first, then phone others (including Sky) who would then match/beat that price and we'd be in the exact same situation. JustGav
But you've managed to acquire 8 points within those last two years. And the previous owner, who is 2 years older than me was banned last year for 28 days, and yet he only paid £450 for the same car....(and declared his ban) But fair point.... however I've just gotten a quote for £490 from A-plan. Faye Brother
As I understand it the temporary bans don't have so much affect for insurers compared to those who collect lots of points. Plus all the individual circumstances of the previous owner are unlikely to be exactly the same as yours so that will create a perceived disparity as well. I understand your point, but it just seems so random... I guess it is better off to get banned than get sp30's for the odd 62 in 50 dual carriage way zone.... JustGav
From Mel: So if I understand you correctly, Fayes brother, I can drive like an idiot and get banned for 28 days, and then all is forgiven in the eyes of the insurer? That makes perfect sense NOT
michael
Insurance is a very personal thing, you can't compare quotes for different people - there is bit of plucking numbers out of thin air though. I'm currently with SKY after several years with Adrian Flux, I found the quote process easy, they were efficient and they were cheaper than anyone else who bothered to call me back. Having said all this I'm still waiting for them to send out the full documentation to me, I know some people have complained about them at this stage... we'll see what happens. SKY might not be the best for you at this moment in time, go with someone else then.
JustGav
I think I may need to remove the business mileage as it appears I may have been TOO honest when I said I would use it for business... It is purely for driving to the office and home.... Ah well, suppose it isn't Sky's fault as such either, just a STUPID system here in the UK for insurance... Safely Insured
I understand your point, but it just seems so random... I guess it is better off to get banned than get sp30's for the odd 62 in 50 dual carriage way zone.... yeah that is often the case. Most companies will ignore your first offence, regardless of if you are banned, and will load the premium more for repeat offenders. Guigsy
sky did take a while to give me the full details... although i dont have any details of the breakdown cover i took :S Im going to be calling them soon enough to sort out the insurance though. Jae Would agree with you, but it wasn't the owners first offence, in fact he had a previous ban. I'll get hold of Luke and ask him if it would change dramatically if I just put commuting on it. The thing is I'd really prefer to use Sky because of the agreed value with regards the aerotop single, that and Luke was extremely helpful, which means I'd be willing to pay a little extra for the nice person on the end of the phone and not some random call centre off shore. (But not £250 more)

I bet if we switched official insurers then people wound phone them first, then phone others (including Sky) who would then match/beat that price and we'd be in the exact same situation. This is exactly whats happening to us at the moment and is the sole reason why we introduced the price match on renewals.

That makes perfect sense NOT No, that's not what I said. My understanding is that penalties in terms of increased premiums may not be so harsh compared to a burgeoning collection of penalty points. Arguably, and playing Devil's Advocate for a moment, in the eyes of an insurance company somebody with 8 points in two years could be adjudged to have been driving around like an idiot anyway. As Michael says, insurance is not an exact science.
JustGav
I'll tell you why I was disappointed. I contacted Sky as my first point of call, I didn't contact anyone else as I would hope Sky would be the best, and if it was around the £500 mark, I wouldn't have even bothered phoning anyone else and just been happy with it (rightly or wrongly)... Lewis
on the phone now to get my renwal - will sky quote me happy....... we'll see EDIT - they are currently unable to quote for my renewal as it is a month away, they will call me back next week to arrange a quote. I think I will try APlan as well this time round as well as all the usual suspects as a few people seem to get decent quotes from APlan. As Michael says, insurance is not an exact science. Normally I would agree with you... However the problem with sp's these days, is that they position cameras in stupid spots to generate revenue... For example in Basingstoke, there is a section of road which is 50... it is dual carriage way with no houses within 200m of the road. The road has a centre median and armco... Now I fully accept that the law has dictated that 50 is the limit, HOWEVER I don't agree with them sitting there claiming it is an accident hotspot when there has been 1 accident in 10 years on it. I know it is wrong to do 58 in the area ready for the 70mph section 100m down the road, but it is easy pickings for them to nab people just before it goes national... JustGav
- will sky quote me happy....... we'll see don't even get me started on the quote me happy bunch.... I had to hang up on them a while back when I had to describe standalone engine management, and the guy said is that like a superchip? PS : Not referring to anyone at sky btw.. they know their stuff...
michael
Phoenix, I'm not sure if this helps to make you feel better but I'm younger than you, live in a "bad" area, have a modified TT and pay under £500 for my insurance. Oh... that might not make you feel better, my bad

JustGav
Okay... Now I'm a happy camper... All in all I got it for £540, which isn't perfect but given the various points raised here... I can live with it. More importantly it means that the single aerotop can share the policy when it is on the road. Bonus points for customer service... Pete
Seems a very familiar story as per many other members (off forum). Typical insurance bartering. Does my head in.
