Is it worth getting a BOV

Considering getting a BOV, cannot really afford one but I feel like treating myself yet again!

After doing a search the HKS SSQV looks like the one to get .

Are they worth the expense?

Will it put an even bigger :) on my face when going for a drive?

Cheers

I really don't get it with noisy BOVs. What's the point of them?

I suppose it could me a bit irritating after a while:(

But they do appear to be very popular.

ask chris wilson if you need one. i bought a blitz one for silly money and it is leaking and whistles abouve 2.5k revs

I'm sure I can guess what Chris would say:)

Might be better to spend the money on something that will make it go faster or look better instead!:)

If you want the noise, run around 1.2bar and have an aftermarket air intake then get the HKS SQV.

If you run less boost or have the std airbox then you're going to be disappointed because you'll barely hear it.

Like the intakes they do nothing except make a noise.

merckx,

I've got the HKS SSQV and a Blitz SUS filter fitted, and I think it sounds ace. I fitted the BOV after about 3 weeks owning the supe, and 7 months on it still makes me smile when you change gear next to pedestrians and make them jump.

It makes different noises at different levels of boost too, on full boost dump, it gives an aggressive high pitched surge of air, but at low boost it a more sedate pssch. Some times it gives a psh psh psh psh noise - like a quiet external wastegate - which sounds cool.

I would never have the car without it, obviously just my opinion so dont all:flame Dev me at once.

Chris

I wonder if those pedestrians are all thinking "Hey! Cool!" What do you reckon?

Yes it is definately worth it. I fitted the same one on my supra last week and it has made the car run much smoother and the turbos come on very smooth and controlled (it could just be me ). The sound is not that bad, although mine gets drowned by the noise from the induction kit. There is another accessory for about £ 15.00 and you get two fins which fits to SSQV. The gold makes the sound louder that the stock and the purple less.

I took it out on a hundred mile trip to Leamington Spa touched about 150 mph no problems.

Personally, money well spent.

Chill son!

I read Chris' post about this too, but know of no Supra thats had these side effects, do you know different? :conf:

I've put one on mine.. sounds ok. The advice was (back in the day) that the BOV actually helps prevent surge on the turbo by venting to atmosphere... thus reducing the stress on them.

If this has changed then let me know :)

Steve, it was something about the UK specs having the MAF fuel controller, and because the BOV was venting to atmosphere it was confusing it, making it run lean (not good) between/after gear changes.

I'm waiting for something similar to appear on the US forum about this, but havent seen anything and they've tuned the bollocks off them.

Woe...woe and thrice woe....!

Not sure I would go THIS far m8...the guys at Toyota knew their stuff for sure...but not sure that you can attribute this much solely to to a BOV that dumps to atmosphere

Loads have been running them with no ill effects for many many thousands of miles

To avoid any confusion, the problems people are talking about are with the UK car (or VVTi) which uses a MAF sensor which measures the flow of air going in. The problem is that when the dump valve dumps to atmosphere the MAF has already registered this air and so the ECU doesn't know that the air has gone somewhere other than the engine.

It's not a problem on Jspecs with a MAP as this measures pressure, which will go down when the valve dumps.

In theory there should be a slight advantage with an atmospheric valve, as the air that comes out is hot having been compressed by the turbos, and will therefore heat up the intake air if recirculated back into the intake. You're not going to notice it though.

I've been assured by ChrisW that this is only a problem for UK Spec's, not the VVT-i.
