Rear upset by road bumps and holes

As in the title really, I find the car's rear end shifting about when I go over larger tarmac strips and dips, you know, those crappy tarmac repairs that we pay £190 a year for.

Is this a shocks thing or a tie arm/bush affair?

What should I be looking for? It a 200,000+ km car on original shocks?

Mine did the same at approx the same mileage it turned out that one of the shockers was fubard and the bushes on the upper suspension arms were shot. The garage replaced the upper arms and the two rear shocks and the difference was amazing it was a totaly different car to drive.Hope this helps mate.

Hi Rob

At that sort of mileage it's probably a combination of all the suspension parts becoming tired; dampers, control arms, ball joints, bushes, etc. You really need to get the car in the air and get everything checked out for play/wear/leakage. As you can see there are a lot of different components that make up the suspension.

It's not a cheap job to completely overhaul the suspension, but will make a massive difference to the ride and handling of the car.

If I can help with anything just let me know.

cheers

Ooh crikey, that's a lot of part numbers.

If I get the rear up on stands and poke around with a pry bar like Edd China I might see lots of wobbly play then? How much is normal, just a tight few millimetres?

  • 5 months later...

Bit of a late update.

New-ish rear shockers and the car feels lovely again, so planted at the back end.

Many thanks to Dini the Owl for sorting me out with budget repair parts.

At last after three goes I have an MOT.
