Flipfinger
So I'm the luckiest driver in the world. Off to work tonight, ran over a stick or something (which made a hell of a noise). Drifted into a side street (fortunately practically outside a mates house) to find one back tyre hissing at me. Not a problem.....I'll put the rather attractive orange-painted steel spare rim on. Jacked the car up to find......the stock wheel wrench doesn't even remotely fit the wheel nuts. Not a problem, however there is a LOCKING wheel nut on it, of which I don't have the sleeve. They are aftermarket BSA (Malaysian) rims, of which I've never seen the like. So again, my Supra is stricken on the roadside. I'm going to phone some kind of mobile tyre fitter (if such a thing exists) tomorrow, but I wondered if I could get some opinions.... What are the chances that the mobile tyre place will be able to get the locking wheel nut off? I think personally I'll do well if they can actually cut it off...... Yours grumpily, Flip PS - anyone want to buy my Supra....I'm selling up and taking the bus / walking from now on.
Terminator
Almost all tyre fitters will have a locking wheel nut remover. Most people loose the key. Any car thief can buy the remover. It takes about the same time to remove as a normal nut. When the guy at my local tyre place showed me how easy it was taking the wheels off a Volvo with locking nuts but no key, I decided to not bother with locking nuts. Not worth the money IMHO, might stop you local scum bag, but not someone taking your wheels to order.
Steve W
At our place we have a complete 'Snap-On' locking wheel nut removal set. As long as there is room around a nut it's basically a set of 'sockets' which tighten onto the wheel nut as you try to undo. IT DOES RUIN THE WHEEL NUT ~50% OF THE TIME. But, as you don't have the KEY, I don't suppose that matters. Any decent tyre/wheel (recovery?) people should have the same. [The only time it hasn't been any good is when the nuts are 'sunk' inside a hole not much bigger than the nut - no room ! Not like that on the Soop though ] Steve..... Steve W
BEATEN AGAIN.... ( ....mumble......drat........bah.......gggrrrrrr......darn..... ) My Soop might be quick, but my typing's P**S SLOW ! ! !
Flipfinger
Thanks guys. I hope the guy has something like that.....it's nothing that elaborate, just a wheel nut with some grooves in, I guess one of those nice ratchets will rip it off double quick. I might get the guy to take the other 3 off too, and replace em with normal wheel nuts - as I expect the unlocking ratchet attachment thingy is somewhere in Asia
Flipfinger
So nobody will touch this with the proverbial barge-pole - unless I bring it in to their fizzucking garage. What are my options......tow truck or trying that tyre sealant?
Gareth Davies
I lost a tire on the way back from JIC (the first supe), and they'd 'neglected' to give me the locking wheel nut key. Got out the local recovery service and they easily removed the locking nut (however as far as 'locking' nuts go these were dire). So maybe if you're an AA/Rac/etc. member they'll fix it? This must happen to people so often there must be a fairly simple solution. If not grab your welding kit and weld a bar to it and remove it that way OT : As a side note as I was walking to the local newsagent from work last week in the glorious sunshine a xantia thing when between one of those traffic calming (road narrows) gates it hit some debris and managed to lose two tyres. As I was walking back they'd got the local tyre guy out ('luckily' only 200 metres down the road), and he was talking to them about the tyres saying they needed some 'Michelin ZR 18's' when the car had stock wheels on it. By the time i'd realised what was happening I was back at the office and too lazy to go back and see if they were still there. Sounded like a bit of a rip off to me...
