Guest trickstermusic
I have just been for an mot, and while it has passed, the figures for the brakes were somewhat surprising. NSF;709kg / lock OSF;374kg / no lock NSR;349kg / lock OSR;421kg / no lock Firstly if the NSF is achieving 709kg.... why arn't the rest, and secondly how come the Near side brakes will lock when the Off side wont? Last week i fitted new rear disc and pads so they may bed a little more, but i think there pretty much there. Also i saw no leaking fluid on the calipers when changing. After i have been for a run there is a lot more heat coming from the NS. Is there some kind of balance for one side to the other? What should i be looking at? Does anyone know what sort of figures it should be achieving. If all were to go to 700kg + it would obviously stop a hell of a lot better. Any ideas? merckx
The front will always be higher than the rear for obvious reasons, ie larger calipers, pads and brake bias I've never seen these sort of figures when I've had my MOT. If the cars stopping well and not pulling too much to one side then I wouldn't be concerned. Sticking pistons and sliders are what I would start looking for if they're not working too well and you've replaced the discs/pads.
Guest trickstermusic
The sliders seemed ok on the rears, havnt checked the fronts, and the pistons pushed into the calipers with no problems so dont think theyed be sticking. I asked the guy for the figures which are from the brake test machine. Occasionally it does feel as though it pulls a bit and since i swapped the rear disc and pads the car breaks better, i just wonder if it could be even better, looking at the figure for the front. paul mac
i would defo check the sliders on the front for correct operation (i am presuming j-spec brakes) i had no amount of problems with the rears until i got rid of the pesky blighters, but as Merckx says if it brakes in a straight line i wouldn't worry after all there cant be to much wrong as its passed the MOT
Guest trickstermusic
yeah its j-spec brakes all round. It breakes ok really its just the figure ive got suggest it could break better and im interested to know why the ns should be breaking better (getting hotter) than the os
paul mac
the only thing you can do is take both front calipers off the car and check them for correct operation, or maybe leave them as is and question the figures the grease monkeys gave you, who knows how they arrived at the figures they did i would have thought such a mismatch of brake force would be felt on the road (perhaps they spilt coffee on the rollers)
Kranz
Take it to another place & get them re-tested. If they are still out then have a look at the problem.
Guest trickstermusic
I had it tested before i swapped the rear discs, and i was in the car operating the brakes so i could see the machine readout. They were uneven then and although the guy said it would pass the mot i decided to swap the rear discs anyway to see if it would cure it (the discs looked really bad). I actually took the car to a differant place for the mot, so im quite confident in the figures the guy has given me as i backs up what i saw for myself, it just indicates theres a problem somewhere else which isnt the discs/pads. wile e coyote
I had same problem but mine was pulling to the left and after new rear discs and pads front and rear and a bloody good clean my breaks all pulled up the same L + R but more on fronts as expected
