Intermittant Engine Cutout - very weird!

Right, come on guys post up what you think it could be as I've had this problem for a while now!! ;)

It's very strange and only happens intermittantly. Bearing in mind I have Auto. Sometimes when I put my foot down to pull away out of a bend etc, my car will cut out completely. Engine turns off and power steering is lost, same with brakes etc.

It's also happened on occasion when travelling at low speeds around a bend. It's like she's struggling for fuel and dies out, but this isn't the case.

I had RLTC and my Clifford Concept 650 fitted a while back and it seems to have only done it since then, but can't be sure. TrickTT has also experience a similar, don't know about exact, problem with his.

Bob, good ol' tech guru that he is, suggested possibly bad coil packs or spark plugs. Would be hard to test though even if I did replace them as again, it only happens every now and then.

Any ideas people?

Cheers,

Greg

Good grief you seem to get enough problems for us all ! , hope this one gets sorted quickly :(

If my loss is your gain buddy all is well :) Cheers Dean.

On a plus side I fitted my Studdy Aerial Saturday and that went very well indeed :)

Hi guys,

The battery was replaced by Chris Wilson in December 2006. Although, it's a maintenance one and it looks like the third terminal has a hard corrded grey type deposit around it. It's tightened down though. All terminals are full too.

There's some weird earth wiring thing coming from the negative battery terminal to the back of the inlet manifold too - is that right? It's a solid metal wire and has nothing else linked to it.

I could also try replacing the alternator and see if that helps for fun as I have a new one spare.

Cheers,

Greg

Mine still does it very occasionally - like 3 times so far this year - totally different driving conditions each time. I am still sure it is a glitch in the RLTC that is causing it. TBH i just live with it as until it starts to happen more often and be repeatable it's impossible to be able to diagnose it.

Thanks Rich. Agreed, but doesn't help if it cuts out when I'm selling the car!!! ;)

Yeah I know Emin - plenty of tech probs from me matey!

Mikey, fuel supply and lines were checked by Greg @ Turbofit recently and are certified as A-OK. Mr Wilson fitted a set of new spark plugs in December 2006, so they should be OK as I've only covered circa 3,000 miles and I'm sure they were Iridiums. :) I also do have a wideband gauge yes.

On idle she ranges from 14.6 - 15.4, but ALWAYS switches between those 2 points fairly quickly. Takes about 2 seconds for the gauge to register all levels between those points and back again.

On boost she drops into the healthy low 11's, then 10's sometimes sites at 10 flat!

Hope that helps. ;)

Thanks,

Greg

It's your RLTC configuration. I used to get that and changed my minimum rpm and minimum speed settings and it's never happened again. I know of a couple of other people at least that have had the same issue.

i had a problem at the weekend with a car not starting at all due to racelogic being faulty so i would look into wiring at ecu matey as the racelogic cuts into the injector feeds that go to injectors. Im really starting not to like these racelogic boxes as had many problems recently. On my car its always switched off now

considering the number of RLTC boxes out there and the fact that they arent always fitted by some of the best I think we hear of very few problems with them. Its a custom bit of electronics, not mass produced and so a few units fail out of the box. Considering the spaghetti that most people have in their footwell its just one of many areas that can fail.

I had a problem with my UK spec last year cutting out whenever I came on boost. Turned out the Fuel Cut Defender was faulty, that was disabled and it was fine.

i used the same dat file that was on my supra.

THink its a terminator one.

Got the units to be exactly the same in configs and still would not fire car.

So plugged my racelogic into customers car and it started.

So off went unit back to racelogic

When they work they are good but just recently i have seen 3 that have had problems.

Each problem racelogic have fixed quickly :)

I am using the Ternminator Dry DAT file guys, so is TrickTT iirc.

It's very weird. I'll look at the settings when I have a mo Ian, but we tried this before mate. There was also of course the LC RPM glitch that we resolved, but this does seem weird.

Would you kindly post up the minimum/max rpm and speed settings you have please?

I contacted Mike Broadbent about any planned firmware upgrades about 2 weeks ago, sadly there aren't any as it's too costly. :(

I don't doubt the ability of RLTC, but they do have a few glitches here and there.

I was convinced it was a RLTC glitch, and still am. The later ones with the display type controller seem a total PITA, give me the early type any day...

Think you're aright Chris. As you remember the Launch Control RPM limit was causing cut out problems and that was a definite glitch that was fixed. This is clearly something similar but a little more annoying. Must remember to turn it off tonight when I go for a 'play'.

Knowing me I'll stack the car into a shed or something though.

I agree with both of you on this. When it first started happening on mine after I fitted the RLTC i did some research and tweeked some settings and like i said earlier, it does it very rarely now. I set Gregs up exactly the same as mine (except for the wheel sizes) yet his seems to do it more often (We've both got the digital adjuster). There is definatly no problem with the installation on mine, and although Gregs ECU loom looks like someone vomited a load of scotchlocks into the footwell, CW did the RLTC installation and that looks good to me - although i did change the inline fuse for a decent blade type fuse holder.

Any chance you could email me your DAT file Ian, so I can see how yours differs from mine.

I shall try and remember to post up my dat file tonight. Bear in mind I use Graham Rudd's application for setting up my RLTC, mainly as the pukka one BSODs my laptop at the moment. So that'll be the one I post up...

If that's no good I'll screenie the settings and post those instead?
