Which t.v. for £1000?

OK I know absolutely nothing about plasma or LCD t.v.'s.

Basically my dad wants to buy a 42" t.v. and he's got a grand to spend.

His preference in terms of manufacturer is either Samsung / Toshiba or Panasonic (I don't know if any of those are actually any good)

Basically, I just want to make sure he doesn't spend a lot of money on a load of old tat.

Any advice would be appreciated as it's the blind leading the blind at the moment.

Cheers,

I've got a JVC 37" LCD which cost £1700 new. (I bought it 2nd hand) and TBH the motion blur is bloody annoying. I certainly wouldn't buy another one. To be fair the picture looks fantastic until things start moving quickly but for watching sports it's crap.

Yep!! I have got a Panasonic 37" on my wall. It is a wonderful telly but sometimes you get faint vertical lines when you are watching football etc......:(

For the price though, I have yet to see better tbh. I paid £950.00 for the TV, Wall bracket, 5 years guarantee and a copy of Ice Age II for my little un.......:D

I work for comet and we are also doing the £999 deal on the pioneer really nice set but does have a separate tuner box which may be a pain and a new pioneer range is due out soon that’s why there trying to shift these still a great deal tho.

if you can afford it id go for the new M87 series Samsung they do it in 37", 40" and 46" the 40” seems to be the best size screen IMO

Stunning picture, 1080p, 3 HDMIs,15000:1 contrast ratio looks awsome with a blue ray player running through it.

So these two are recommended then:-

http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/products/details/index~modelcode~PAN-TH42PX70PED.htm#_

But what's better about the Samsung one that makes it £100 more expensive for a 2" less screen?

Im not sure the Panasonic is true 1080P, also the Panasonics don't come with the pedestal stand which retails at £99. You will need this unless you’re planning on wall mounting it. Can’t really tell from the empire direct site whether it is included in the price or not.

Iv got both of the 37" versions of these 2 side by side at work and it's tough to pick a winner ;)

Can I hijack this thread? ;)

My dad's after a 32" for circa £400, its doesn't need to be uber-special, any recomendations since we are TV hunting? :)

Gaz.

I bought this HERE it has hdmi (1080p) and also vga should you want to hook it up to your pc. picture quality is on a par with more expensive sets.

it alos has picture in picture which is quite cool.

Fooks sake, I cant believe I read all of that.

:D

IMO.

That's exactly it mate, technically it's a bit of a toss up between LCD and Plasma, but it comes down to what each person prefers. I went plasma cos I liked the picture, really thought the LCDs looked like you were playing the telly on your monitor. Okay a plasma might not last 20 years, but I change my telly every few years anyway.

If you don't know what YOU want, go and have both demo'd, the decision will end up being what YOUR eyes prefer :)
