Part four

So with Belgrade a distant (but still disturbing memory) we head for the health spa region of Sokobanja. The roads were once again very quiet and the small amount that there was had decided that 50 mph was plenty fast enough. We made good time and found the turn off to drive into the mountainous region. To be fair, it really was a stunning part of the country with huge forests, massive lakes and glorious greenery everywhere. in fact, it had everything you could wish for except sign posts directing you to the hotel :(

After driving round the picturesque area for 1.5 hours and chatting to several members of Shreks family, we were still no closer to finding the hotel and so I made the decision to head back to the main road and find a motel. Now, given the experiences so far that may seem to have been a bit silly but it proved to be a fine decision.

Within an hour or so, and with darkness closing in, we found a well lit (and more importantly open) motel. We booked and in went to our room to b surprised to find it held a king size bed, a twin bed and also single bed. The had obviously thought we were fair game and given us the most expensive palatial room in the place. Ah well, at least we had a roof over our head.

we went down to dinner and had a good meal with homely style cooking that consisted of starers and main courses as well as a few local beers. After a sound sleep we got up to have a nice breakfast and then went to pay. "Here we go", thinks I, "Serbian capitalism is about to strike again but no such thing. For the room, the dinner, the drinks and the breakfasts we paid the grand total of 55 euros! :D

So, with a good nights sleep and a full belly, I head off once again.

Part 5

So, we head off that morning to destination Platamonas in Northern Greece. I had promised Rose some sun and relaxation on the beach and had chosen the hotel for its location and relative luxury.

After a short while we leave Serbia and attempt to enter Macedonia. At the border control we encounter Shreks distant

cousin. I stop and smile. He looks out and smiles. He then utters those now familiar words "Green Card". "No problem", sways I and happily hand him the paper that Shrek gave me back in Serbia. "This is for Serbia" says Shreks cousin, "you need a new one for macedonia". "How much", says I. "50 euros" says he with a capitalist grin. And after parting with the cash we are once again on our way.

We finally leave Macedonia and enter Greece with no drama save for some darkening clouds in the distance. Eventually those darkening clouds give way to a storm and a torrential thunderstorm. This continued until we get to Platamonas and the sea views etc.

Did I say time on the beach? I think not! It poured with rain all day and after having dinner we retired to the room to watch the lightening flash over the sea. Now whilst that was dramatic, it wasnt quite the romantic beach encounter I had in mind. Ah well, at least we had telly to watch! :)

Life is very good!

I settled into normal life straight away as i didn't get into holiday mode due to starting work a couple of days after landing.

My days (there are no weekends here per se) are all the same. I get up at about 10.30, have breakfast, go to the beach, have lunch, swim, go take a nap, and then go to work at 17.30 until 1.30.

Life is very cheap here with my only real expenses being rent, electricity, water, telephone and internet but 300 euro per month covers all those. As my bar work pays 1000 per month (and i get lunch, dinner and my drinks free) and the UK job pays 300 per month, I manage to save quite a bit ready for the winter where the money drops to next to nothing.
