CJ
At what point does it sink in that you actually live somewhere like that and don't just feel like you are on holiday. I can't wait to get that stage in my life I think it is when you get here and start shopping for furniture and normal household things. That and starting work in the evenings sort of make you feel "off hols".

CJ
Hiya folks, sorry for the delay in posting but it has been quite hectic during the last few weeks. Now then, where to start? As mentioned previously, the trip over was a great adventure. I left the UK on the Saturday morning and drove through France to arrive at Karlsruhe in Germany on that Saturday evening. The hotel looked fine and dandy but when i went to book in, they had me down for a single room only - which was a bit disconcerting seeing as Rose (my Chinese lady friend) was travelling with me! After a short discussion we eventually managed to get another single room which was on the next floor but at least we both got a well deserved good nights sleep The next morning we headed off through Germany to stay at Villach in Austria. This is located in the alps region and I would implore anyone of you who have never been to visit this region - it is simply stunning. It also afforded me to opportunity to drive through the longest tunnel I have ever been in at over 4.5 miles long! Yet again, the stop in Austria was not without incident. We were sat outside the hotel at about 17:00 enjoying the views and the fresh air when a coach pulled up and around 50 Chinese tourists get off. Thy were going to be staying at the hotel too - Rose was not impressed and after an hour or so, I could see why. If you thought the japanese tourists took lots of pics then you have never met a group from China on a mission! They snapped everything - and I mean everything - including me a Rose sitting down have a cup of tea! Monday morning saw us get up and go down for a buffet breakfast - with 50 Chinese folk who had never heard of queues or manners. They were bumping and barging and generally scoffing everything in sight as if it was on ration Ah well, at least the scenery made up for it. CJ
Part Two After our frantic buffet breakfast, we left Austria and headed for our next stopover in Sokobanja, Serbia. This was always going to "interesting" as despite what people were saying, the sat nav maps only cover the main motorways in Croatia, Serbia Macedonia etc and even then they are not too reliable. But, with Rose as the navigator, we couldn't go wrong eh? we left Austrai, went through Slovenia (the roads were incredibly quiet) and entered Croatia - and all without incident. Then, Rose decided we needed to get off the main road and turn right. As my sense of direction is pretty crap I decided to follow the instructions and sure enough, we came to a border crossing - the first of the journey. Standing there was a mountain of a man. He must have been 6'13", 22 stone and was carrying the biggest machine gun i have ever seen. He looked at us and then uttered something which sounded like "grugle schungle grung shelkvish". I did the thing all Brits do when confronted by a foreign person who doesnt speak English and proceeded to talk very slowly and loudly. "W h a t a r e y o u s a y i n ggg" I asked. He looked at me and said again "grugle schungle grung shelkvish". I then did the next best thing and looked at him and smiled and handed my passport. He gave it a cursory glance, muttered, stamped it nd we were off into Serbia - or so I thought. About 2 miles in we come across a road sign that proudly stated Sarajevo was 50km's ahead!!! Oh shit thinkis I, Bosnia was not on the itinerary and so we do a swift u turn and go back to visit my friend Shrek at the border crossing. we idle up, he takes one look at us, utters some blasphemy, and waves us through without even looking at the papers. Phew - a narrow escape:d
CJ
Part three So, off we go back into Croatia and start to head towards Serbia. After the last border crossing, it must surely now be a doddle eh? Erm...not quite. Obviously, Shrek had a bigger, meaner brother with an even bigger gun who worked at the Serbian border control. we get to the booth and he utters just 2 words "green card". I lean out and explain to him that as we were all EU brethren we don't need that anymore. He nods, smiles and again says "Green Card". Once again I try to explain that we are all european brothgers and that my insurance certificate (which i am proudly waving) covers me. Again he smiles but this time changes his words to "No green card, no entry". And then, after a short pause he explains I could buy one off him for 120 euros Welcome to the new capitalist state of Serbia methinks. Anyway, after relieving me of the euros, we were once again on our way. Driving though Serbia was like stepping back in time. Most of the cars were old Yugo's. Most of the drivers were old Yugo's too! But, all was calm and carefree until we hit Beograd - formerly known as belgrade - at 17.00 and rush hour. It made London look like a Devon village. A 5 lane dual carriageway became like a scene out of Le mans with cars, trucks, buses, bikes and scooters vying for the best lane. Me? i stayed in the centre lane and poohed my pants until evenually (and more by luck than judgement) we got through and out the other side. Pete
"grugle schungle grung shelkvish". I know that one... it means "Turn around my bald friend, you've come the wrong way". I'm looking at buying in Rhodes now, seriously disillusioned with the UK since coming back and feeling quite depressed. How's the heat wave hit you there? It was unbelievably hot in Rhodes.
