most fruit and veg in supermarkets has been processed and washed anyway, when was the last time you saw mud on any veg in a supermarket?? but that process contains a lot of manual handling and for that reason I do wash all fruit

The stuff in the pre-packed packaging is washed - in chlorine. It makes it last longer.

My parents owned a farm had a large horiculture business, so I know a little about this subject.

You really must wash all fruit and veg before eating or using in cooking. Although most will have had a quick spray with clean water prior to packaging, insecticide and chemical residue will remain in relatively high percentages on the surface (not to mention dirt from the air, soil, bird sh*t and anything else they get in contact with - including some the dirty hands of some filthy packager). This is especially so for things like lettuce, strawberries, grapes and apples.

Beware if it's from Spain or "third world" countries, though the UK has extremely strict rules on the sprays and insecticides that can be used, this is not the case for MOST other countries. Spain has some of the worse controls in the western world for chemical usage.

When it comes to fruit and veg, British is the safest and cleanest to eat.
