Misfire shows its ugly head AGAIN!!

Quick recap:

1)Holding back/miss when 2nd tubby comes on!

Reset ecu and problem's gone:)

2)80 to 300 miles later misfire is back again!

So changed plugs and reset the ecu, cars now running sweet!

3) Ran sweet for 2 weeks, but now misfire is back again:(

This time i noticed when it misfires there is a clear'ish black haze coming from exhaust, and quite a lot of it?

So reset the ecu today then took her for a run and she's running sweet again:search:

As plugs have now been checked are the coil packs next on the list? (coilpack connectors look as new)

Can anyone tell me why would the ecu reset, sorts the prob out for a few hundred miles or so?

Or is this common when one or some of the coil packs start to have problems?

Car will be going to chris wilson soon for bpu, but would like to sort this prob before hand, so he has a car thats running properly to work on!

If i can't fix the prob then i think i will leave the car at chris's for a few weeks or so! (if thats ok chris:) ) and he can have a good tinker!

Cheers again guys for any advice..

Cheers mate! will check them on sunday..

If this is the prob, why would the ecu reset sort the prob out for a while:search:

I Still can't get my head around the ecu reset sorting the prob out for a short period of time?

Surely if it was a loose connection/bad plug/coilpack, reseting the ecu would make no difference:search:

Cheers chris...

As I've understood it, when you reset the ECU, it's goes into a 'safety' mode. The ECU then re-learns it's best ignition and timing settings for the car, this can take quite a few miles.

I suspect the ECU reset is simply masking the real issue with the car.

I remember your problems before, what plaugs have you installed and what gap did you set them to? What bar boost are you using? What condition are the coil pack connectors? Has the fuel pump been changed recently? Has the filter been replaced in the last couple of years?

Hi homer, ok

1)Replaced my 8k old stock denso's! with NGK Bcpr7es 0.9mm

2)stock uk boost, no ebc! 2nd decat/induction, Hits 0.7 and 0.85

3)look brand new! perfect condition!

4)Orignal uk pump as far as i know!

5) not sure about the fuel filter, car always serviced by toyodatech for last 4 years! but not to sure if they would have replaced it during that time..

Hope that gives a better picture...

What Homer said was interesting as to me its like something is getting worse and every ECU reset is making it cope with the problem masking it again until it gets even more worse.

Might even be something like a weak coil pack damaging a spark plug.

What condition are the connectors to the coil pack in? If they are old and brittle, fit new ones and see if it cures the problem. If it is an intermittent misfire then it could also be one of the coil packs is failing. You may be able to tell from the colour of the plugs which cylinder it is misfiring on (if it is just a single cylinder).

Right guys the coilpack connecters are in A1 condition, not brittle at all!

this problem first happened about 14 months ago, after about 3 ecu resets the problem went away for over a year!

and then came back about a month ago!

Today ive taken out the plugs/checked gaps/check coilpack clips all look fine to me!

Nic when it misses, it holds back from when the second turbo starts to spool, once its on full boost there is no miss through to the red line!

All the plugs looked the same, how would i tell if its missing on only one of the cylinder's?

cheers guys...

How many cracks do the coil packs have?

Might be worthwhile getting a loan of a known good coil pack then trying it in 1 cylinder at a time.

Another thing, is it definately a missfire? I know when the connector starts coming off the EGCV vsv on mine as its broken, I get a holding back bump sensation then its fine. Just a thought. (But then that doesn't explain the ecu reset thing, damn)

Cracks? none as far as i can see!

I think it is a misfire,it dosent shake the car but it holds back pretty strong and chucks loads of clear'ish black smoke out the exhaust, then once on full boost it pulls how it should..

Will have to wait for it to come back as i reset the ecu when i check/regapped the plugs and shes now running fine:)

But im sure it will be back pretty soon:(

  • 1 month later...

Hi mate, Since my last post & an ECU reset, the car has been running fine until last week!(covered about 350miles in that time)

The miss is now back, and ive noticed it chucks out lots of black smoke when missing! (overfueling:search:)

The car is due to go to cw's to get bpu'd as soon as my new 02 sensors get to him, so at that time he is hopefully going to find out/fix the problem!

Im guessing it might be the 02 sensors, if not then it might be the coilpacks, to be honest i really don't know!

But im sure chris will... i hope:)

Hope to have some good news in about 4 weeks time:)

Perhaps it is overfuelling in some fashion and you are actually going so rich it's blowing out the spark. The stock map goes suddenly very rich somewhere between 3700 and 4100 rpm (depending on the mood it's in ;) ) so that might be the issue, especially as once you get properly on boost above the fuel cut limit you are adding more air to a fixed amount of fuel and therefore leaning the mix off.

Wouldn't be your stock O2 sensor doing that though.

Very intresting point ian!

Sounds like that could well be the problem,

So then the next question is what would cause the car to do this:search:

The main reason i got the 02 sensors is because as far as i know they are still the orginal sensors on the car, and thought it would be a good idea to replace them when chris fits my full bpu mods!

Thanks for the reply mate, and i hope once cw gets the car he can finally sort this problem out, and will let everyone know so it can help others out too..

cheers chris..

Hi mate, im also having the exact same problem, my car is an na-tt with BPU spec besides the 1st decat and fuel pump still need to be changed.

im not feeling much now at 4000rpm when the second turbo kicks in but after around 5500rpm it seems to kick in nice al the way to readline?? i havent looked at anything yet, i guess i'll check the spark plugs first??

any advice form anyone please???
