Graham S
Are those engines a bit overkill for that or does that seem about right, what sort of power/speed will it have? sorry not trying to sound like a boyracer here, just curious.. Will it be quick as far as yachts go, or is that about normal?
Ewen
Are those engines a bit overkill for that or does that seem about right, what sort of power/speed will it have? sorry not trying to sound like a boyracer here, just curious.. Will it be quick as far as yachts go, or is that about normal? By the time this projects in build, we are hoping the MTU 4000 V20 will be available at around the 6000 continuous hp mark. At about 150 tonnes, 12,000 hp through waterjets will be good for 40 knots or about 45 mph. The project is the largest Predator to date, and 40 knots for this size of boat is good. We could even have the two V20s and a gas turbine for additional sprint speed, but no prospective customers have committed to this yet. Heres a rather naff artists impression of the basic concept so far http://www.burevestnik.ru/yachts/215.php

Ewen
Fecking hell!!!!!!......whats the MPG or knots per barrell or whatever???!!! Power required to hit 40 knots is about 9000 kW. At full chat of 40 knots, each engine burns 0.215 kg of fuel, per kilowatt, per hour. So, at 40 knots the engines burn 1,935 kg (0.215 x 9000) of fuel per hour, or 2,300 litres per hour, or 507 gallons per hour. At 40 knots she will travel about 45 miles in an hour. That works out to about 11 gallons per mile, or 0.09 mpg. Fuel capacity is about 40,000 litres. At full speed, there is 17 hours worth of fuel. So at 45 mph, 40,000 litres (33.6 tonnes) of fuel will only last for 780 miles.
