RedM
I have an old Toshiba SD220E DVD player. It was multi-region when I bought it but about a year ago it stopped playing anything other than PAL discs. I downloaded a firmware hack which made it work fine for about six more months. Then it needed redoing again. Worked fine. Trouble is it now needs doing yet again but this time I cannot do it. The normal hack procedure is to press SETUP, under VIDEO select PAL/AUTO and press SETUP again. Insert the hack disc and close tray. Disc plays for ten seconds. Job done. However, the PAL/AUTO option has vanished! So the info I require is: How do I get the PAL/AUTO option back? If I can't get it back, can I reset the hardware? I know there are some HC fiends on here and, as I've exhausted all my usual channels, I'm hoping you can help. Cheers.

RedM
Cheapskate? These weren't cheap when they first came out. It still produces an excellent picture though Component Out. I don't want to buy another one if I can get this one working again. That's just silly.
leelbuk
http://www.videohelp.com/ full of hacks for all dvd players and has a forum you could try searching for answers - your best bet. Failing that, I suggest getting a Xbox 1, run softmod on it (chips the xbox without actually using a physical chip) and then upload xbox media centre onto it! Then you have: 1. A multi region DVD player (with component out and HD upscale if you get the HD cable) 2. A multiformat player. i.e. it can play anything your PC can practically, including DivX, Xvid, WMV, mp3... loads! 3. Its can connect to a network so you can use it to access all your Mp3's, videos etc from a networked PC 4. Plays Xbox games (backups and originals), old skool console emulators BTW, a 2nd hand xbox costs as much as most of the cheapest DVD players out there yet is much better quality that some of the more expensive ones
Snooze
Was about to suggest posting the query on avforums, but looks like you've already tried!
RedM
Was about to suggest posting the query on avforums, but looks like you've already tried! Yeah. As I understand it once the PAL/AUTO option vanishes it means the player is locked into that region for good. I was just hoping that someone on here might have known different. Oh well. Snooze
Found quite a bit of info here. Some people reporting the same problem - looks like they just re-applied the firmware upgrade.

AFAIK you can only re-apply the firmware upgrade using the SETUP, PAL/AUTO, SETUP method which I can do because the PAL/AUTO option has vanished!
